His Streets, Not Mine … part 9

Peaches took the envelope but didn’t open it right away.

Her eyes stayed on Yasmine.

“A trial date?” she repeated slowly, like she was tasting the words. “Since when?”

Yasmine’s smile didn’t fade, but it tightened—just a hair. Lawyer instincts. Controlled. Measured.

“It was scheduled after the last continuance. Priest was notified through his previous counsel.”

“Previous counsel?” Peaches scoffed. “He ain’t had nobody but you.”

Yasmine blinked once. “Then he didn’t tell you everything.”

That did it.

Peaches glanced down at the letter, thumb rubbing over Priest’s name typed clean and bold at the top. Her jaw clenched. Priest hated paper trails. Hated courtrooms even more. If there was a trial date, it meant something had stuck. Or someone had talked.

“You come to the club for this?” Peaches asked. “Could’ve called.”

“I needed confirmation it was received,” Yasmine replied. “And I wanted to see who’d be standing in his place while he’s… unavailable.”

Peaches looked her up and down, unimpressed.

“Then look good. ‘Cause I’m the one.”

A beat passed. The bass from the club thumped through the walls, low and steady like a heartbeat.

“What’s the charge?” Peaches asked.

Yasmine hesitated. Just long enough.

Peaches laughed—short, humorless.

“Yeah. That’s what I thought.”

She tucked the letter under her arm. “You can tell Priest I got it. And you can tell whoever set that date they better have their story straight.”

“And if he doesn’t show?” Yasmine asked carefully.

Peaches stepped closer, eyes hard, voice calm in that dangerous way.

“Priest always shows. The question is—who’s gonna walk out breathing.”

Yasmine held her gaze, then nodded once.

“I’ll be in touch.”

As she walked away, Peaches finally opened the envelope.

Her stomach dropped.

Court.

Witness listed.

Name redacted—but she already knew.

Kaylah.

Peaches folded the letter slowly, slid it back inside, and pulled her phone out.

Priest was resting.

But not for long.

... Read moreHaving read this chapter, I can't help but reflect on how tension builds so effectively in narratives involving legal battles and street loyalties. The interplay between Peaches and Yasmine is charged with unspoken threats and careful control, reflecting real-life moments when communication is laced with underlying stakes. In my personal experience, receiving legal notices or court dates about someone you care about can feel like a sudden shift in reality, where the familiar world becomes uncertain and fraught with worry. The mention of a previous counsel and hidden information resonates with how often people close to the situation may not know the whole truth until the last minute. It also illustrates the importance of vigilance and readiness — qualities Peaches embodies when she accepts the trial notice and prepares to face the consequences. I found the mention of the witness Kaylah particularly compelling, as it introduces personal betrayal and tension that heightens the stakes. It reminded me of times when relationships are tested by external pressures, especially in legal or confrontational contexts. The way the story layers the setting — the club’s bass thumping like a heartbeat — adds to the atmosphere, making the tension palpable. For readers who enjoy crime drama or suspenseful stories rooted in complex characters, this chapter offers a slice of the reality where loyalty, fear, and bravery intersect. It’s a reminder that in situations involving court trials and street justice, the emotional and psychological weight can be just as intense as the legal proceedings themselves. Keeping an eye on these dynamics enriches the reading experience and deepens empathy for the characters navigating these dangerous waters.
