Second Chance⦠part 1
Giaās eyes followed the pause ā not the kind where someone thinks, but the kind where someone calculates.
āNo, thatās okay,ā Elias said too quickly. āThey catered today.ā
āSince when does your job cater on random Tuesdays?ā she asked calmly.
Another beat of silence.
The clock on the wall ticked loud enough to feel like a heartbeat.
āI told you,ā he sighed, forcing a smile. āBig project.ā
She nodded slowly, stepping closer ā close enough to straighten his collar like a loving girlfriend would.
Her fingers brushed the faint smear of rose-colored lipstick.
She looked at it.
Then up at him.
āYou switched colognes,ā she said softly.
Elias stiffened.
āThis one smells⦠sweeter.ā
He swallowed. āGiaāā
āYou donāt wear sweet,ā she continued. āYou wear that old woodsy one because you said sweet gave you headaches.ā
Silence.
Thick. Guilty. Loud.
Gia finally wiped the lipstick with her thumb and held it up between them.
āThis project got a name?ā
His mouth opened.
Closed.
Opened again.
āGia, itās not what you think.ā
She smiled.
But it didnāt reach her eyes.
āThatās funny,ā she said quietly. āBecause every time a man says that⦠itās exactly what I think.ā
He stepped forward. āYouāre overreacting.ā
She stepped back.
āNo. Iāve been underreacting.ā
Another pause.
Thenā
Her phone buzzed.
A text lit up the screen on the counter.
Unknown Number:
Heās leaving now. Same restaurant as last time. Red dress tonight.
Gia stared at it.
Elias watched the color drain from her face.
āWhoās that?ā he asked carefully.
She locked the phone and slid it into her pocket.
āOh,ā she said sweetly. āJust someone helping me with a project too.ā
His brows furrowed. āWhat project?ā
Gia grabbed her purse.
āFinding out how long someone can lie to my face before I stop loving them.ā
She walked past him toward the door.
āGia, waitāā
She turned.
āOne more thing.ā
āYes?ā he said hopefully.
She pointed to his collar.
āNext time tell her to use transfer-proof lipstick.ā
Then she left.
And for the first time since theyād been together ā
Elias didnāt go to work late.
He went chasing after the truth he thought he was hiding.
Gia didnāt slam the door.
That was the part that shouldāve scared him.
She walked out calm. Quiet. Controlled.
Elias exhaled like heād survived something.
Big mistake.
āø»
Down the hall, Gia pulled out her phone.
Unknown Number blinked again.
She typed:
He bought it. Leaving in five.
Three dots appeared instantly.
Good. Tableās ready.
Gia smiled.
Because the āother womanā wasnāt some stranger.
It was her.
Different wig.
Different makeup.
Different name.
The first time she noticed the lies, she didnāt cry.
She planned.
The late nights? She followed him once.
The sweet cologne? She sprayed it on the jacket herself while he slept.
The lipstick? Her own ā from a night she staged weeks ago.
Every breadcrumb was intentional.
Tonight was the trap.
āø»
Elias pulled up to the quiet restaurant downtown ā the one he thought was their secret place.
The hostess smiled.
āTable for Elias and Rose?ā
He nodded, confused but flattered.
Gia ā now āRoseā ā sat in the booth, red dress hugging her curves, hair cascading differently, eyes lined sharper.
He didnāt recognize her.
Not at first.
Men rarely do when theyāre only looking for what they want.
āYouāre even more beautiful than your pictures,ā Elias said.
Gia laughed softly.
āSit,ā she purred.
They talked.
He flirted.
He complained about his āclingy girlfriend.ā
āSheās sweet but dramatic,ā he said. āAlways suspicious.ā
Gia nodded sympathetically.
āSome women just donāt know when to trust,ā she said.
Then she leaned closer.
āSo⦠how long you been cheating on her?ā
He chuckled.
āDamn. Straight to it, huh? About three months.ā
Click.
The phone on the table recorded everything.
He didnāt notice.
āShe think Iām working late,ā he added. āPoor thing even offered to bring lunch today.ā
Giaās smile tightened.
āOh that is sad.ā
āYeah,ā he smirked. āBut youāre worth it.ā
That was when she stood up.
Slowly.
Calmly.
Pulled the wig off.
Eliasās face drained of color.
āGiaā¦?ā
āHi, baby,ā she said sweetly. āWorking late again?ā
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
āYou lied. You cheated. And you talked about me like I was stupid.ā
She picked up her phone.
āAnd now I have proof.ā
People were staring.
āI can explaināā
āNo,ā she said softly. āYou already did.ā
She leaned down close to his ear.
āThe scary part isnāt that you cheated.ā
He swallowed hard.
āItās that I became someone else just to catch you.ā
She straightened.
āNow imagine what I can become now that I donāt love you.ā
She walked away.
Leaving him exposed.
Humiliated.
And finally understanding ā
Gia wasnāt naive.
She was patient.
