Lines We Cross
⸻
Janelle stared at her phone for a full minute before finally pressing call.
It rang twice.
“Hello?” Amara’s voice was soft. Guarded.
“Hey… it’s me.”
Silence.
Janelle swallowed. “I didn’t know if you’d answer.”
“I almost didn’t,” Amara admitted. “But I wanted to hear what you had to say.”
Janelle exhaled slowly. “I messed up. I walked away when things got hard instead of fighting for us. And I’ve regretted it every day since.”
“You didn’t just walk away, Janelle,” Amara said, hurt slipping into her tone. “You disappeared. No explanation. No closure. You left me to heal something I didn’t break.”
“I was scared,” Janelle whispered. “Scared of how much I loved you. Scared I’d lose you anyway.”
“Well congratulations,” Amara snapped quietly. “You did.”
Another pause — heavier this time.
“I don’t want to lose you anymore,” Janelle said. “Can we talk in person? Please.”
Amara hesitated. “I don’t know if I’m ready.”
“I’ll sit across from you and take whatever you need to say. I just need to see you.”
After a long breath—
“Fine. The park. Twenty minutes.”
⸻
When Janelle arrived, Amara was already there, sitting on the bench with her arms crossed, staring at the ground.
She looked stronger.
But tired.
Janelle approached slowly. “Hey.”
Amara didn’t look up right away. “You look the same.”
“You look… beautiful.”
Amara finally met her eyes. “Don’t.”
Janelle sat beside her, leaving space between them.
“I cried over you for months,” Amara said quietly. “I replayed every argument trying to figure out what I did wrong. I blamed myself for you leaving.”
Janelle’s eyes filled instantly. “You didn’t do anything wrong.”
“But you let me think I did,” Amara whispered. “That’s what hurt the most.”
“I was a coward,” Janelle said. “I should’ve fought. I should’ve stayed. I should’ve chosen you.”
Amara laughed softly — not happy. “I loved you so much it scared me how broken I was when you left.”
“I still love you,” Janelle said. “I never stopped.”
Amara looked away, wiping her cheek. “Love doesn’t erase pain.”
“I know,” Janelle said. “But I’m willing to earn you back. Slowly. Honestly. However long it takes.”
Silence stretched.
“You hurt me,” Amara said. “Bad.”
“I know.”
“But I missed you every day,” she admitted. “Even when I was mad. Even when I swore I was done.”
Janelle turned toward her carefully. “Does that mean there’s still a chance?”
Amara sighed. “It means I’m scared to trust you again.”
“I won’t run this time.”
“You promise?”
“I swear.”
Another pause.
Then Amara finally leaned into her chest — just slightly.
“Don’t make me regret this,” she whispered.
“I won’t,” Janelle said, wrapping her arms around her gently. “I’m home now.”
⸻
Janelle’s phone buzzed just as she and Amara were laughing softly on the couch.
Her smile faded.
Unknown Number.
She opened the message.
Unknown:
You really thought you could take her from me and live happily ever after?
Another text came instantly.
Unknown:
Enjoy her while you can. Because I’m going to make you watch her suffer.
Janelle’s chest tightened.
Then a photo loaded.
It was Amara — walking into the park earlier. Taken from a distance.
Her hands started shaking.
Unknown:
She doesn’t know what kind of danger she’s in because of you.
Janelle whispered, “No… no, no.”
She knew.
This wasn’t random.
This was Reyes.
Reyes always waited. Always watched. Always struck when things were calm.
Too calm.
Her phone buzzed again.
Unknown:
If you don’t leave her alone, I’ll bury her.
Janelle stood up so fast she nearly dropped the phone.
“Amara,” she said urgently. “We gotta go. Right now.”
“What’s wrong?” Amara asked, alarmed.
“Reyes knows about us. She’s threatening you.”
Amara’s face drained. “What?”
“She sent pictures. She’s been watching. I told you this was too good to be true.”
Another buzz.
Unknown:
Tick tock.
Janelle grabbed Amara’s hands. “You need to go back to your house. Lock your doors. Don’t answer anyone. I’ll handle Reyes.”
“No — I’m not leaving you,” Amara said.
“Amara listen to me,” Janelle said fiercely, eyes glossy. “Reyes is dangerous when she feels like she’s losing control. I’d never forgive myself if something happened to you.”
“But she’s your problem, not mine.”
“She made it yours the moment she targeted you.”
Janelle pulled her into a tight hug. “Please. Go home. For me.”
Amara hesitated — then nodded.
“Text me when you’re inside,” Janelle said. “And don’t stop moving.”
As they rushed out, Janelle’s phone buzzed one more time.
Unknown:
Run all you want. I already know where she lives.
Janelle’s blood ran cold.
“She knows your address,” Janelle whispered.
Amara froze.
And for the first time since getting back together — real fear settled between them.
Reading "Lines We Cross" truly resonated with me because it captures the complexity of human relationships—especially when love is caught between fear and hope. The story of Janelle and Amara illustrates how past regrets can linger and how rebuilding trust after betrayal is a slow, fragile process. What struck me most was the realistic portrayal of emotional vulnerability: Janelle's admission of cowardice and Amara's pain from being left without closure. I've experienced similar emotions in relationships where communication broke down under pressure, and the silence became more painful than words. The suspense introduced by the threatening messages from Reyes adds a compelling layer to the narrative, showing how love doesn’t exist in isolation but can be tested by external dangers. It reminded me how important it is to protect not just the relationship but the individuals within it when faced with threats. In real life, navigating a reconciliation after a breakup often involves acknowledging mistakes, allowing space for healing, and patiently earning back trust—exactly what Janelle promises Amara. It's a process of commitment not just in words but in actions over time. This story also highlights the significance of safety and support systems when fear resurfaces. Janelle urging Amara to lock her doors and stay safe while she confronts the threat reflects the protective instincts that arise when love is genuine. Overall, "Lines We Cross" is a poignant reminder that while love is powerful, it also requires courage to face the ghosts of the past and the dangers of the present. It champions resilience, hope, and the determination to fight for what truly matters.
