Call Me By Your Name…. Part 2
Blount blinked at her response, thrown off more by her tone than the setting itself. The music pulsed around them, lights shifting across the room, but Janelle stood grounded—unapologetic, unmoved.
He glanced around once, lowering his voice.
“You’re serious?” he asked. “This… this is what you do?”
Janelle stepped down from the pole gracefully, grabbing a silk robe and slipping it over her shoulders. She didn’t rush, didn’t hide. If anything, she carried herself with more composure than he’d ever seen in his classroom.
“I said not right now,” she repeated, quieter but sharper. “You caught me in the middle of work, Professor.”
There was a brief pause. Blount exhaled, adjusting his stance like he didn’t quite know where to place himself anymore.
“I didn’t expect to see you here,” he admitted. “You’re one of my top students. I just—”
“And that changes what?” she cut in, finally meeting his eyes fully. “You think people come from one world only?”
That landed.
Blount hesitated, then shook his head slightly. “No… no, I guess not.”
A server passed between them, breaking the tension for a moment. Janelle used it to collect herself, her voice softening just a fraction.
“Look,” she said, “you see me in class one way. That’s real. This is real too. Both can exist.”
He studied her, trying to reconcile the student who sat front row taking notes with the woman standing confidently in front of him now.
“You don’t owe me an explanation,” he said after a moment.
Janelle gave a small, almost tired smile. “Good. Because I wasn’t planning on giving one tonight.”
There was a beat of silence—different this time. Not tense. Just… aware.
Blount nodded once. “Alright. I’ll… see you Monday.”
“Yeah,” she replied, already turning away. “In class.”
As she walked back toward the stage, the music seemed louder, the world slipping back into place around them. But for both of them, something had shifted—and neither of them could pretend it hadn’t.
