That Got Away Season Finale….

Jah stayed right there on one knee, holding up the box like it meant something. Like it could erase everything. Britney leaned against the doorframe, arms folded tight across her chest, eyes locked on him with pure disbelief.

ā€œYuh done laugh?ā€ he asked, a small smirk still on his face, but it was starting to fade now.

She wiped under her eye like she was catching tears—but it was from laughing too hard.

ā€œJah… yuh really fly come all the way yah fi dis?ā€ she said, shaking her head. ā€œA ring? A that yuh bring come gi mi?ā€

ā€œIs not jus a ring,ā€ he said, standing up slowly now, trying to regain control of the moment. ā€œIs mi a show yuh seh mi serious dis time.ā€

ā€œSerious?ā€ she echoed, her tone sharp. ā€œSerious did deh weh when yuh did a run up and down wid odda gyal? When mi did deh yah a cry like eediat fi yuh?ā€

Jah’s jaw tightened. ā€œMi tell yuh seh mi change.ā€

Britney laughed again, but this time it was colder.

ā€œYuh nuh change, Jah. Yuh just get catch too much times.ā€

That one hit him. You could see it.

He stepped a little closer, lowering his voice. ā€œBritney… mi come yah fi fix things. Fi start ova. Mi cyaan lose yuh.ā€

She didn’t move. Didn’t soften. If anything, she straightened up more in the doorway, blocking him like a wall.

ā€œYuh already lose mi,ā€ she said plainly. ā€œYuh just late fi realize it.ā€

Silence sat between them for a second. Heavy.

Jah looked down at the ring, then back up at her. ā€œSo a dat? Yuh just ago dash weh everything we build?ā€

ā€œWe?ā€ she cut in. ā€œWe neva build nuttin stable, Jah. A bare stress, lies, and sweet talk.ā€

He exhaled hard, frustration creeping in now. ā€œSo wah—you have somebody else now?ā€

Britney paused just long enough to let it sink in. Then she shrugged.

ā€œDat nuh even matter. But even if mi did—yuh nuh have no right fi question mi.ā€

Jah scoffed, pacing a step back. ā€œAfter everything mi do fi yuhā€”ā€

She stepped forward now, finally, her voice rising just a little.

ā€œNo—after everything yuh do to mi.ā€

That shut him up.

They stood there, staring at each other. The history, the tension, everything thick in the air.

Britney glanced at the ring one more time and shook her head.

ā€œKeep it, Jah,ā€ she said, her tone calmer now, but firm. ā€œFind somebody weh believe in yuh promises. Cause it nah work yah so.ā€

And with that, she started closing the door.

Jah stepped forward quickly. ā€œBritney—waitā€”ā€

But she didn’t.

The door shut right in his face.

And this time… she locked it.

The lock clicked.

Jah stood there for a second, staring at the door like it might open again if he waited long enough. His jaw clenched, then relaxed. Slowly… a smirk crept back onto his face.

ā€œYuh always did stubborn,ā€ he muttered under his breath.

Inside, Britney leaned against the door, eyes closed, taking a deep breath like she had just run a marathon. Her hands trembled slightly—but she quickly steadied them.

Then—

Click.

Her eyes snapped open.

She frowned.

Slowly… she turned around.

The door was still locked.

But the sound didn’t come from the lock.

It came from inside the apartment.

Britney’s breath hitched.

ā€œā€¦Hello?ā€

Silence.

Then… a low chuckle.

Not Jah.

Not familiar.

Her heart started pounding as she took a cautious step forward, peeking into the living room.

Everything looked the same… couch, table, her bag—

Then she froze.

The balcony door was slightly open. The curtains swayed gently from the breeze.

And standing just beyond them…

A figure.

Tall. Still. Watching her.

Britney’s voice came out barely above a whisper.

ā€œā€¦Who’s there?ā€

The figure stepped forward into the light.

Her stomach dropped.

ā€œā€¦No,ā€ she breathed.

Because the man standing in her living room…

looked exactly like Jah.

Same face. Same build.

But his expression?

Colder. Darker.

He tilted his head slightly, studying her like she was the one who didn’t belong.

Then he spoke—

in perfect American English.

ā€œI was wondering how long it would take you to noticeā€¦ā€

... Read moreThis story vividly captures the raw emotions involved in relationships strained by mistrust and past mistakes. From personal experience, navigating the aftermath of broken trust in a relationship is incredibly challenging. When promises are made repeatedly and then broken, it leaves wounds that don’t heal easily. The scene where Jah presents the ring as a symbol of change and hope reminded me of moments many face when trying to mend what’s been damaged. What stood out most in the story was Britney's realistic and guarded reaction. She's no longer willing to be vulnerable to empty promises, which is something many can relate to when they’ve been hurt before. Her refusal to simply accept a ring without genuine change is a powerful reminder that trust must be rebuilt, not bought. The eerie twist at the end, introducing a mysterious figure resembling Jah but with a darker presence, adds a thrilling layer to the narrative—leaving readers hanging and questioning what comes next. Stories like these, steeped in Caribbean dialect and culture, bring authenticity and depth to the characters and setting. They resonate not just on a personal level but also celebrate cultural storytelling traditions. If you've ever faced a moment where you had to choose between holding on or letting go, this finale mirrors that tension perfectly. It’s a reflection on growth, accountability, and the complexities of love. I found myself reflecting on how communication and honesty can make or break relationships. "That Got Away" serves as a reminder that sometimes, closure comes not from reconciliation but from acceptance and moving forward.
