Between her Lips and Lies SEASON FINALE

The airport was loud. Rolling suitcases scraped across the floor, flight announcements echoed through the terminals, and people rushed past one another without a second glance. Yet somehow, Domo heard absolutely none of it.

Her eyes were locked across the terminal.

Alani.

Her old best friend stood near one of the coffee stands with a woman beside her. Not just beside her — close. Comfortable. Familiar. The woman leaned into Alani while speaking, making her laugh softly. Domo’s brows furrowed immediately.

For years Alani acted uninterested in women. Every conversation about relationships ended with shrugs, jokes, or her changing the topic altogether. Domo used to tell her everything — every heartbreak, every girl she ever loved, every insecurity she carried. Alani always listened without judgment.

So seeing her standing there with another woman felt unreal.

“Domo.”

Lashae’s voice barely registered.

Domo continued staring from a distance, confusion settling deeper into her chest.

“Domo,” Lashae repeated, sharper this time.

Nothing.

Lashae snapped her fingers in front of her face.

“Bro, are you even listening to me?”

Domo blinked finally, pulling herself away from the sight of Alani.

“Huh?”

Lashae looked at her with disbelief. Tears sat in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall.

“That’s exactly the problem.”

Domo swallowed hard.

“What?”

“You don’t feel nothing until it’s too late.” Lashae adjusted the strap on her bag. “I’m standing here pouring my heart out to you and you somewhere else mentally.”

Domo shook her head quickly.

“No, I’m here. I’m listening.”

“But you’re not hearing me.”

Those words landed heavy.

Lashae looked exhausted now. Not angry. Not dramatic. Just tired. Tired of begging for reassurance. Tired of pulling emotions out of someone that kept them buried underneath pride and silence.

The boarding line slowly began moving.

Lashae grabbed the handle of her suitcase and stepped forward.

Domo’s chest tightened instantly.

“Lashae, don’t do this.”

Lashae kept moving.

“Please,” Domo said, following behind her. “Don’t leave like this.”

Lashae stopped for a brief second but didn’t turn around.

“For once,” she said quietly, “you should’ve said everything when I was still willing to stay.”

Domo’s eyes watered immediately.

“I can fix this.”

Lashae shook her head slowly.

“You keep trying to fix things after they break.”

The line moved again.

Domo reached for her wrist gently.

“Please, bro…” Her voice cracked. “Don’t go.”

Lashae finally turned around. Her expression softened for the first time that night when she saw Domo genuinely unraveling in front of her.

But it still wasn’t enough.

She slowly removed Domo’s hand from her wrist.

“Take care of yourself, Domo.”

And just like that, she turned and proceeded onto the line.

Domo stood there frozen as the distance between them grew larger and larger.

Behind her, Alani laughed softly at something the woman beside her whispered.

For the first time in a long time, Domo felt completely alone.

The subtle emotional cues—like Domo’s inability to focus amid the airport's chaos, and her shock seeing Alani with another woman—remind us how feelings we ignore can suddenly hit hard. The conversation between Domo and Lashae reveals a common but painful dynamic: one person pouring out their emotions while the other withdraws or fails to respond sincerely until it’s almost too late. I appreciate the author’s realistic portrayal of this struggle, bringing attention to how important it is to communicate openly and not delay expressing our feelings. This is especially impactful in LGBTQ+ narratives, where representation and visibility are crucial, as highlighted by the tags #pridemonth and #lesbianvisibility. The mention of Alani’s previous disinterest in women and now being with someone else also touches on personal growth and identity exploration, which can be confusing for friends left behind. It reflects how people's journeys can shift in unexpected ways, sometimes leaving us feeling disconnected. In my own experience, dealing with the distance that grows between close friends or partners—especially when unspoken truths linger—is painful. This story’s ending, with Lashae leaving and urging Domo to take care of herself, underscores the importance of self-care when relationships become too difficult to salvage immediately. It’s an honest and relatable moment for anyone who’s faced similar heartache. Overall, the finale is a compelling reminder to confront feelings early, listen deeply, and be present for those who matter before the chance slips away.
