The Pastor and The Prayer
The pastor grabbed her wrists gently, lowering them from his chest as he looked around the empty sanctuary hallway. The church was dark except for the dim lights near the pulpit. Every sound echoed louder than it should have.
“Aaliyah,” he muttered under his breath, struggling to keep his composure. “You’re making this harder than it already is.”
She stepped closer anyway, her brown eyes locked on his. “Then stop fighting it.”
His jaw tightened. He knew he should’ve never answered her calls. Never met her tonight. But every time he tried to distance himself, she pulled him right back in.
Aaliyah slid her hands beneath his blazer, feeling the warmth of him underneath. “I been thinking about you all week,” she admitted softly.
The pastor closed his eyes for a brief second before exhaling slowly. “You don’t understand what this could cost me.”
“But you still came,” she whispered.
That was the problem.
No matter how many sermons he preached, no matter how much he prayed, he kept ending up right here with her — alone, tempted, and losing control piece by piece.
He looked down at her, conflicted. “We can’t keep doing this.”
Aaliyah tilted her head slightly, unconvinced. “Then why do you look at me like you belong to me?”
Aaliyah smirked when she saw the tension all over his face. She knew exactly what she was doing to him, and that only made her bolder.
“You always try to act so disciplined,” she whispered, stepping closer until her perfume surrounded him. “But your body tells on you every time.”
He let out a slow breath, shaking his head as if he was fighting himself more than her. “Aaliyah…”
“No,” she interrupted softly. “Tell me I’m lying.”
Silence.
That silence was all the answer she needed.
Her fingers brushed against his chest slowly, teasingly, while his eyes stayed locked on her. The pastor swallowed hard, his restraint thinning by the second.
“Why do you tempt me like this?” he asked again, voice rougher now.
“Because you only belong to God in that pulpit,” she murmured. “But when you’re with me…” She paused, leaning closer to his ear. “You forget all about being a pastor.”
He shut his eyes briefly, conflicted and frustrated with himself for how badly he wanted her. Every warning in his mind told him to walk away, yet his hands still found her waist instinctively.
“Aaliyah,” he said quietly, almost pleading with himself more than her, “you don’t realize how dangerous this is.”
But neither of them moved away.
The hallway outside the church erupted into chaos.
“Aaliyah, you foul for this!” one of the women screamed as she lunged toward her.
Aaliyah stumbled backward in shock before the second woman grabbed at her sleeve, fury written all over her face. The sound of heels scraping against the church floor echoed while accusations flew from every direction.
“You sitting up here messing with a pastor?”
“You knew he had a family!”
“Enough!” the pastor’s voice thundered through the hallway.
He forced himself between them, pulling the women apart before things turned uglier. His chest rose heavily as he looked between all three women. The authority in his voice was still there, but his guilt was louder.
The first woman laughed bitterly, tears already falling down her cheeks. “Really? Over her?” she spat. “You preach to everybody every Sunday about righteousness.”
The other woman stood frozen, unable to even argue anymore. Her eyes stayed locked on him like she didn’t recognize the man standing there.
Then she slowly opened her hand.
A pregnancy test dropped onto the floor between them.
The entire hallway went silent.
Aaliyah’s expression changed instantly as she stared down at it. The pastor looked like the air had been ripped from his lungs.
“What did the Bible say about cheating?” the first woman asked again, voice cracking this time. “About lying? About destroying people?”
The pastor couldn’t answer.
For the first time since this all began, he had no words. Only shame.
The woman with the pregnancy test finally spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. “I prayed for this baby with you.”
That sentence hit harder than the yelling ever could.
Aaliyah slowly stepped back, realizing she was no longer standing in some secret fantasy. Real people were bleeding because of choices they all made.
And somewhere nearby, a phone camera was still recording everything.
