Red Bottoms & Revenge By: A.Powell

The city lights bounced off the black BMW as Deuce unlocked the doors. Winter laughed softly at something he whispered in her ear, her heels clicking against the pavement while people across the street still stared a second too long.

Deuce noticed it. He always noticed it.

His hand tightened around her waist possessively before he opened the passenger door for her.

That was when the valet accidentally dropped the keys.

Not just any keys.

A silver keychain slid across the concrete and stopped directly at Winter’s heel.

Her smile faded instantly.

Deuce looked down. His jaw locked.

The keychain was shaped like a small iced-out raven.

Winter hadn’t seen that symbol in two years.

Not since the night Cairo disappeared.

The valet hurried forward nervously. “My bad, sir—”

“Where did you get this?” Winter interrupted sharply.

The young man blinked. “A man gave it to me. Said if a woman in red walked out with a man wearing a black watch… I was supposed to hand it over.”

Silence.

Deuce slowly removed his hand from Winter’s waist.

“What man?” he asked calmly.

Too calmly.

The valet pointed across the street.

But the sidewalk was empty.

Only a motorcycle could be heard speeding off into the distance.

Winter looked down at the keychain again. Her fingers trembled slightly as she turned it over.

There were numbers engraved on the back.

11:13 PM.

Deuce immediately checked his watch.

10:41.

“Get in the car,” he ordered.

Winter looked up at him. “You know what this is?”

Before Deuce could answer, a loud crash echoed nearby.

Both of them turned sharply.

Across the street, the windows of a luxury jewelry store suddenly shattered outward.

People screamed.

Car alarms began blaring.

And standing inside the destroyed storefront… was a woman in a white fur coat staring directly at Winter.

Smiling.

Winter didn’t move at first.

The woman in the white fur coat stood perfectly still inside the shattered jewelry store like she belonged there more than anyone else. Glass sparkled around her like fallen snow, but she didn’t react to it. Didn’t even blink at the chaos outside.

She just smiled at Winter.

Slow. Certain. Familiar.

Deuce stepped in front of Winter without thinking, blocking her view.

“Don’t look at her,” he said low.

Winter’s voice came out quieter than she expected. “I know her.”

Deuce didn’t respond right away. That pause said more than words ever could.

Across the street, the woman tilted her head slightly, as if she could hear them through the distance. Then she lifted something in her hand.

A lipstick case.

Winter’s stomach dropped.

Because it was hers.

A shade she hadn’t worn since the night she changed her name.

The woman mouthed something.

Winter couldn’t hear it—but she knew exactly what it was anyway.

You left something behind.

Deuce grabbed Winter’s hand and pulled her toward the BMW. “We’re leaving. Now.”

But Winter didn’t move.

Her eyes stayed locked on the woman in white.

“Deuce,” she said slowly, “that’s not someone from my past.”

A beat.

“That’s someone I buried.”

The woman in white stepped forward through the broken glass like it didn’t exist, heels clicking calmly across shards. A man finally rushed out from the store yelling for police, but she didn’t even glance at him.

Her attention never left Winter.

Deuce opened the car door again, sharper this time. “Get in the car, Winter.”

But before Winter could decide—

The BMW’s engine suddenly started on its own.

Headlights flashed.

Doors locked.

From inside.

Deuce froze.

“That’s impossible,” he muttered.

Winter stepped back slowly. “No,” she whispered, eyes still on the woman. “That’s not impossible.”

That’s intentional.

Across the street, the woman in white finally stopped walking.

She raised her hand and pointed—not at Deuce.

At Winter.

And for the first time, her smile faded into something colder.

Like recognition had finally been returned.

Then she said it.

Not loud. Not needed.

Winter read her lips perfectly.

“Come back.”

... Read moreReading "Red Bottoms & Revenge" instantly transports me into a suspenseful world filled with mystery and emotion. The vivid imagery of city lights reflecting on the sleek black BMW and the tense atmosphere when the valet drops the silver raven keychain creates a cinematic experience. What stood out most was how the story balanced suspense with deep character insight. The silver keychain, shaped like an iced-out raven, is more than a mere object—it's a symbol of Winter’s shadowed past and the unresolved mystery surrounding Cairo’s disappearance. I’ve noticed in stories that objects with personal significance often serve as powerful devices to unravel hidden narratives, and this story uses it masterfully. The interaction between Winter and Deuce adds layers of possessive protectiveness and underlying tension, making their relationship palpable and authentic. When the luxury jewelry store's windows shatter and a woman in a white fur coat appears, it adds an unexpected twist that deepened my curiosity. The woman’s calm amidst chaos and her knowing smile amplifies the feeling that the past refuses to stay buried. Furthermore, the enigmatic timestamps on the keychain hint at something deliberate and potentially dangerous unfolding soon. It reminded me of moments when details that seem minor hold the key to the entire mystery, encouraging readers to pay close attention. The car locking and starting itself is a chilling detail that suggests someone is manipulating events remotely, adding a thrilling sci-fi or thriller edge. What makes this piece feel so immersive is its ability to use ordinary motifs—heels clicking, a lipstick shade, and a keychain—to unravel a complex tale of revenge. The phrase "You left something behind" carries an emotional weight that hooks readers emotionally, urging us to understand what Winter fled and what she might be forced to face again. From my perspective, stories like this work best when they combine personal stakes with atmospheric tension, and this story does exactly that. It’s a vivid reminder that our pasts, even when buried, can return in the most haunting and unexpected ways, challenging our sense of safety and identity. I would recommend this narrative for anyone who loves suspense, drama, and intricate plot twists that keep you guessing until the very end.
