Allegedly….. part 1
Kingston and Novae had pulled up to the house and were instantly confused when they saw a professor bleeding out on the stairs.
“Perhaps we should help,” Novae said nervously, looking at Kingston.
“Nigga, what?” Kingston shot back. “I love my life. That’s the quickest way to get locked up. Stay in the car.”
He pulled out his phone and dialed the police.
More cars began pulling up. One rolled alongside Kingston’s vehicle.
“What the fuck happened?!” Anika asked, leaning out her window.
Kingston shrugged.
“I’m just as confused as everyone else.”
“Yo,” Novae muttered, still staring at the body. “Why would they leave him there, though?”
“Maybe they didn’t leave him there,” Kingston replied. “He probably walked there and never made it to wherever he was going.”
“But to stop there?” Novae asked.
Nobody had an answer.
The group sat there in an uneasy silence, their eyes fixed on the professor. Blood stained the concrete steps beneath him. His glasses lay a few feet away, one lens cracked. The front door behind him was shut tight.
“That’s what I’m saying,” Anika said. “If he was trying to get help, why not knock on the door?”
“Maybe he did,” Kingston replied.
“Then why didn’t anybody answer?”
The question hung in the air.
Novae swallowed hard. Something about the scene didn’t sit right with him. The body was positioned awkwardly, almost too neatly. Like someone had placed him there after the fact.
“You think he was killed somewhere else?” Novae asked quietly.
Kingston looked over at him.
“I think we should let the police figure that out.”
In the distance, sirens began to grow louder.
For the first time since arriving, everyone seemed relieved. Whatever had happened here was far above their pay grade—and none of them wanted to be standing too close when the questions started.
As soon as the detectives arrived, they rushed toward the professor, hoping there was still time to get answers. One of the paramedics checked for signs of life while the detectives stood nearby.
A few moments later, the paramedic slowly shook his head.
The professor was pronounced dead.
Novae’s face immediately lost color.
“Dead?” he asked, blinking rapidly. “Like… flatline dead?”
One of the detectives glanced at him and nodded.
“I’m afraid so.”
Novae grabbed the side of Kingston’s car to steady himself.
“Oh hell nah,” he muttered. “I wasn’t ready for all that.”
Kingston looked from the detective to the body lying on the steps. The whole situation felt unreal.
“How you die on my steps?” he asked, throwing his hands up. “Out of all the places in the city, you pick my damn house?”
Several officers exchanged looks.
“Sir, do you know the victim?” one detective asked.
Kingston laughed nervously.
“Know him? I barely know my neighbors. I definitely don’t know no professor.”
The detective scribbled something in his notebook.
“What time did you arrive?”
“Maybe ten minutes before y’all did,” Kingston answered. “Me and Novae pulled up, saw him bleeding, and stayed right where we were.”
Novae nodded aggressively.
“Exactly. We ain’t touch him. We ain’t move him. We ain’t even get close.”
“Good,” the detective said. “Because right now we’re trying to determine how he ended up here.”
Kingston stared at the body again.
“That’s what I’m trying to figure out. Why my steps? What connection does he got to me?”
The detective’s expression remained neutral.
“That’s one of the questions we’ll be investigating.”
Those words made the atmosphere even heavier.
Because if the professor had no reason to be there…
Then somebody had put him there.
And suddenly, everyone standing outside the house felt a little less comfortable.
