Keep It in the Closet

A Novel by A. Powell

To everyone around him, Malcolm has the perfect life—a successful career, a beautiful woman by his side, and a baby on the way. But behind closed doors, Malcolm is hiding a truth he has spent years trying to bury: he is secretly attracted to men.

Rather than face his sexuality, Malcolm builds the life everyone expects him to have. His girlfriend believes they are creating a future together, completely unaware that their relationship has also become the perfect cover for the part of himself Malcolm refuses to reveal.

Everything changes when Malcolm leaves town and she discovers something he never intended for her to see. What begins as suspicion quickly turns into a devastating discovery involving secret messages, hidden meetings, and another man who clearly isn’t a stranger.

But Malcolm’s sexuality isn’t the darkest secret in the closet.

The man Malcolm has secretly been involved with is someone his girlfriend already knows—her own brother. Even worse, their relationship began before Malcolm ever started dating her. She soon realizes Malcolm didn’t randomly choose her as his girlfriend. Her brother helped him choose her because dating his sister gave the two men the perfect excuse to always be around each other without anyone becoming suspicious.

Now pregnant and questioning whether any part of her relationship was real, she has to confront two people she trusted most. And when Malcolm returns home unexpectedly, he realizes the closet he’s been hiding in has finally been ripped wide open.

Some secrets destroy relationships.

This one could destroy an entire family.

... Read moreReading 'Keep It in the Closet' offers more than just a dramatic plot twist; it dives deep into the complex emotions involved in hiding one’s true identity to meet societal expectations. Having recently explored themes of secrecy and acceptance in literature, I found Malcolm’s character incredibly relatable in his struggle to balance personal truth with external appearances. What stood out to me was the intricate dynamic between Malcolm, his girlfriend, and her brother. This underscores how deception can permeate family relationships and lead to profound emotional consequences. The novel doesn’t shy away from showing how keeping secrets can create layers of tension, guilt, and distrust, ultimately threatening to shatter bonds. The psychological depth of Malcolm’s conflict—his fear of acceptance and the pressure to conform—reflects real-life challenges that many face today. It reminded me how important it is to foster open, honest communication within families to prevent misunderstandings and heartbreak. If you appreciate stories with complex characters and meaningful explorations of identity and relationships, this novel is compelling. It also highlights the sensitive topic of sexuality and the social stigma that can accompany it, encouraging empathy and a broader cultural understanding. Overall, 'Keep It in the Closet' successfully weaves together suspense and emotional honesty. It’s a thought-provoking read that resonates beyond the pages, prompting reflection on the consequences of living behind closed doors.
