I recently visited this quirky, historic spot, and it was such a unique experience! From the outside, The Cave Store is charmingly rustic, with its wooden shingles and a prominent sign that immediately catches your eye. It looks like a quaint souvenir shop, which it partly is! But don't let that fool you; it's the gateway to something much older and more fascinating. This isn't just any shop; it's the entrance to Sunny Jim Cave, one of La Jolla's well-known sea caves. There's a rich history here, dating back to the early 1900s when a German artist carved the tunnel by hand to allow access to the cave from land. It's truly a historical landmark and a notable place to visit in California. The adventure truly begins when you purchase your $10 ticket and head for the descent. What awaits is a long, illuminated wooden staircase with handrails, winding its way down into the natural rock tunnel. I counted quite a few steps – over 100, if memory serves! It's well-maintained and feels safe, but wear comfortable shoes. As you go down, the air gets cooler, and the sound of the ocean grows louder. It's an atmospheric journey, building anticipation for the stunning view ahead. Once you reach the bottom, you're in the heart of the La Jolla sea cave. The feeling of being inside this natural wonder is truly something else. The darkness of the cave contrasts dramatically with the bright opening leading directly to the Pacific Ocean. Looking out, you get a stunning view of the clear blue water, the rugged La Jolla coastline, and often, kayakers paddling gracefully through the waves just outside. It's an incredible spot for photos – the natural light filtering in creates a beautiful, almost ethereal frame for the ocean, perfect for capturing memorable shots. My visit was about 20-25 minutes, mostly spent soaking it all in and capturing some truly memorable shots. If you’re lucky and the water is calm, the visibility is fantastic, almost like a 'clear cave' where you might glimpse marine life swimming below.
