The Kopitiam JB LOCALS choose over ORIENTAL KOPI

Hanyuan Daily is a Nanyang-style Hainanese kopitiam in JB with over 50 years of heritage. With Oriental Kopi being the usual JB kopitiam go-to for many Singaporeans, the real question is: does Hanyuan Daily deserve the same hype?

OUR READINGS:

🥪DOUBLE DELIGHT BREAD PLATTER 8.50RM ($2.75) - 🍴4/5

Served with coconut and pandan kaya. Both spreads were aromatic and fragrant, but not much was given. The bread itself was fluffy and moist, while the toasted version had a crisp bite and a nice salty butter finish.

🍞HOMEMADE KAYA + COLD BUTTER 3.40RM ($1.10) - 🍴4/5

A solid classic done well. The coconut kaya was generously spread, and the toast paired nicely with the slab of cold butter.

🍞HAINANESE STEAMED BREAD 6.90RM ($2.24) -

🍴3/5

Soft and fluffy, but not particularly memorable despite being one of their signatures.

🧁EGG TARTS 12.50RM ($4.05) - 🍴4/5

Compared with Oriental Kopi, the custard was similarly sweet and creamy. The difference was in the crust, flakier and less thick here, which I personally liked more

🍜EGG FRIED NOODLES WITH FRIED CHICKEN 12.90RM ($4.90) - 🍴3.5/5

The noodles were fairly standard and not especially memorable. The fried chicken was the better one, with a fragrant turmeric seasoning. The chilli was mild and slightly sweet, though similar versions in Singapore arguably do it better.

🍜CHAR KWAY TEOW 12.90RM ($4.90) - 🍴3.5/5

This had a solid charred, smoky flavour. It’s comparable to some of the better versions in Singapore.

🍤SHRIMP RICE NOODLE ROLLS 12.10RM ($3.92) -

🍴4.5/5

The texture was chewy yet silky, paired with sweet shrimp and a savoury sauce. Honestly better than what you’d get at some dim sum spots in Singapore.

☕TRADITIONAL KOPI 5.80RM ($1.88) - 🍴3.5/5

Just alright. Nothing memorable, nothing wrong.

💲VALUE- 5/5

With mains starting from around S$4.90 and kopitiam staples like kaya toast under S$3, the pricing is genuinely strong. For a heritage kopitiam offering decent food quality in an air-conditioned space, this is excellent value.

COMPARED TO ORIENTAL KOPI- 3.5/5

Oriental Kopi still feels stronger in variety and overall menu appeal, but Hanyuan Daily does well with the classics, especially its bread and breakfast items.

⚠️ADVISORIES:

LOCATION - Not as centrally located as Oriental Kopi's main branch, but multiple outlets make it more accessible depending on where you are in JB.

MENU - Bread and breakfast items are great. Mains are decent but not necessarily standout.

COMPARISON - If you're looking for variety, Oriental Kopi may still edge it out. If you want solid classics and good value, Hanyuan Daily works.

... Read moreHaving visited both Hanyuan Daily and Oriental Kopi several times, I’ve come to appreciate why locals lean towards Hanyuan Daily for a more authentic, value-for-money kopitiam experience. The key lies not just in the food quality but in the heritage and atmosphere. Hanyuan Daily, with its 50-year history, embodies the classic Nanyang kopitiam charm—where you get generous kaya spreads with fragrant coconut and pandan flavors, and bread that’s perfectly toasted to a crisp yet retains fluffiness inside. One memorable visit was when I tried their shrimp rice noodle rolls. The texture was distinctively silky and chewy, highlighting fresh ingredients paired with a sweet-savory sauce that I found better than many dim sum dishes I've tasted back in Singapore. This alone makes Hanyuan Daily a worthy stop for those craving traditional flavors. The price point is another attractive factor. With mains like egg fried noodles with turmeric-seasoned fried chicken priced below S$5, and kaya toasts just over a dollar, it’s an ideal spot for budget-conscious diners who don’t want to compromise on taste or ambiance. Unlike Oriental Kopi’s more extensive menu, Hanyuan Daily focuses on perfecting a few classics, notably their bread platters and egg tarts, which feature a flakier, lighter crust that balances the creamy custard beautifully. Location-wise, while Hanyuan Daily isn’t as centrally positioned as Oriental Kopi’s main branch, the multiple outlets across Johor Bahru make it quite accessible depending on where you are staying or passing through. The air-conditioned setting also provides a comfortable dining environment away from the tropical heat. From my personal experience, if you’re seeking variety and an expansive menu, Oriental Kopi may still hold the edge. However, for those prioritizing authentic Nanyang kopi culture, focused quality, and excellent value, Hanyuan Daily stands out as a gem preferred by locals. It’s a refreshing alternative that deserves recognition beyond just the local crowd, promising a taste of true Johor heritage with each bite.
