Book Review: Pretty Things by Janelle Brown

Book Review: Pretty Things by Janelle Brown

This emotional psychological thriller had me totally hooked from beginning to end.

Here’s a brief summary:

Nina is a con woman with a settle to score with a wealthy heiress whose family wronged her in the past. What’s more, she desperately needs money to pay for treatments for her ailing mother.

Vanessa, a pampered heiress and social media influencer, is obsessed with broadcasting every facet of her life on Instagram. However, when her charmed life takes a nosedive, she seeks companionship and rents out a portion of her Lake Tahoe estate to a glamorous young couple.

However, the couple are not who they claim to be.

This thriller has all the right elements:

💎 Deception

💎 Double Crossing

💎 Blackmail

💎 Theft

💎 Murder

I absolutely loved this one. Check out my link in the bio for a full book review.

... Read moreWhen I picked up Janelle Brown's 'Pretty Things', I knew it was a psychological thriller, but I wasn't prepared for just how deeply it would pull me in. This book truly deserves its 5/5 rating because it delivers on every single promise, weaving a story so intricate and compelling that I couldn't put it down. It’s the kind of read that makes you want to curl up in a cozy reading atmosphere with a cup of tea, just devouring every page. At its heart are two complex women, Nina and Vanessa, whose lives collide in a whirlwind of secrets and manipulation. Nina, our con artist protagonist, isn't just seeking revenge; her actions are driven by a desperate need to protect her ailing mother, adding an incredibly emotional narrative to her schemes. You're constantly weighing her morally ambiguous choices against her deep love and loyalty, which makes her a character you can’t help but root for, even as she's plotting elaborate deceptions. The dynamic of the 'con artist couple' she's part of adds another layer of intrigue, showing how far people will go for their loved ones and their perceived justice. Then there's Vanessa, the 'rich heiress' and social media influencer, whose perfectly curated online life hides a world of vulnerability and past trauma. Brown does an excellent job of peeling back the layers of Vanessa's seemingly glamorous existence, revealing the loneliness and pressure beneath. Her obsession with broadcasting every facet of her life on Instagram is a poignant commentary on modern society, making her character surprisingly relatable despite her immense privilege. As her charmed life takes a nosedive, you witness her desperation and how easily she falls prey to the very 'pretty things' that surround her. The real genius of 'Pretty Things' lies in its 'Dual POV' structure, which allows you to delve into both Nina's calculated plans and Vanessa's unraveling world. This narrative choice intensifies the suspense, as you're privy to information that the characters themselves aren't, making every twist and turn feel even more impactful. The book is packed with themes of class, privilege, and the blurred lines between victim and perpetrator. The deception and blackmail escalate, leading to a truly 'shocking double-cross' that will leave you gasping. I was constantly trying to guess who was playing whom, and Janelle Brown masterfully keeps you on your toes until the very end. While not a traditional romance, the 'doomed love affair' hinted at in summaries refers more to the tangled, often destructive, relationships and loyalties that bind these characters. It's about the sacrifices made and the painful choices that lead to inevitable confrontations. For anyone who loves a psychological thriller that challenges your perceptions and keeps you guessing, 'Pretty Things' is an absolute must-read. It's a luxurious feel of a read, immersing you completely in its world of intricate cons and compelling characters. This book will linger in your thoughts long after you've turned the final page, making you question everything you thought you knew about justice, revenge, and the allure of 'pretty things'.
