... Read moreAfter diving headfirst into 'Dorothy Must Die' by Danielle Paige, I honestly haven't stopped thinking about this series! It’s not just a book; it’s a complete reimagining of everything I thought I knew about Oz. If you're searching for a Wizard of Oz retelling that flips the script entirely, where everything is darker and more dangerous, then you absolutely need to pick this up. What truly captivated me is how Paige crafts this incredible dystopian world. Forget the bright, technicolor Oz; this version is bleak, almost monochrome, stripped of its magic and joy. And the reason behind it? None other than Dorothy Gale herself! The original review only scratched the surface of how truly unsettling it is to see Dorothy as the villain, but believe me, she’s become an absolute evil tyrant. The author masterfully sprinkles in clues throughout the book, like references to her unsettling 'PermaSmile' and 'Botox in a tube,' which to me, were clear signs of a Tyrant leader exerting control. It makes you question everything you believed about fairytales. And speaking of questioning, the portrayal of characters like Glinda is just brilliant. One of the pages I saw even highlighted text asking if Glinda was a 'good witch' or the 'baddest bitch.' I found myself constantly wondering, 'why isn’t Glinda a good witch anymore?' This dark YA retelling doesn't pull any punches, exploring the moral ambiguities of characters we once thought were purely good or evil. The Revolutionary Order of the Wicked, Amy’s new allies, aren’t necessarily 'good' in the traditional sense, but they're fighting for something better. It’s a fantastic exploration of what happens when power corrupts, even the seemingly innocent. This isn't just a standalone story; it's the beginning of an epic Dorothy Must Die series. The first book sets up Amy's impossible mission to literally kill Dorothy, but knowing there are more books in the Dorothy Must Die series books makes the stakes feel even higher. You're left wondering how Amy, a seemingly ordinary girl from Kansas, can possibly stand against such immense, corrupted power. The entire concept feels deliciously unhinged book, especially when you consider how deeply ingrained the original Oz story is in our culture. It challenges your perceptions and truly makes you think. For anyone who loves a good retelling story that isn’t afraid to get dark and gritty, this is a must-read. It's got elements of adventure, rebellion, and a quest for redemption, all wrapped up in a package that will keep you guessing. If you’ve ever wondered what might happen if the heroes turned bad, or if the land of Oz was actually a place of despair, then this series is definitely for you. It’s perfect for fans of twisted fairytales and dark fantasy, offering a fresh, thrilling perspective on a classic. I personally found it hard to put down, eagerly devouring each chapter to see how Amy would navigate this treacherous new Oz. It truly is a unique take on the Wizard of Oz wicked witch trope, but with Dorothy as the ultimate antagonist.
