Before you toss it, consider checking out local charities or recycling programs that specialize in electronic waste. They can provide a responsible way to dispose of your old electronics and ensure they are recycled correctly, minimizing environmental impact. I used to be a Customer Retention Specialist II at a call center when represe ting DirecTV YEARS ago. I had access to a lot of internal documents, was back support for the customer service, tech support, and the Movers department as well and we weren't even supposed to know anything about the internals of any of their devices. Even a customer telling us they took it apart was a flag we were required to report and to notate on the customers account. It would be reported to the legal team, although they never did explain to us why. They absolutely do not want anyone opening these up. Customers who threw their DVR in the trash, or gave them away when canceling their services, had to pay anywhere from $99, to $400, depending on the type of DVR they had, per DVR, if it wasn't too old for us to take back, normally 3-5 years. I always felt bad for people and help them out however I could to waive those fees when they couldn't return the equipment. Now, seeing the inside of one for the first time, I am glad I helped as many as I could.
