South Dakota’s Wild Heart: Wind Cave, Badlands & Beyond (States 22 | Parks 19 & 20)

South Dakota completely stole our hearts. 🏔️🦬

From the eerie underground passages of Wind Cave to the otherworldly spires of Badlands National Park — our 19th and 20th national parks did not disappoint. Add in the iconic faces of Mount Rushmore, the incredible Crazy Horse Memorial still being carved from the mountain, and more wildlife than we could count (bison, bighorn sheep, pronghorn, prairie dogs — it was a full safari moment), and you’ve got one of the most underrated states in the country.

South Dakota, you are state 22 checked off and we are already planning our return. 🇺🇸

... Read moreVisiting South Dakota feels like stepping into a living storybook of nature and heritage. One of the most memorable experiences was exploring Wind Cave National Park, a labyrinth of underground passages filled with unique formations and a sense of mystery that’s hard to find elsewhere. It's not just a cave tour but a journey into one of the world's longest mapped caves, offering both guided walks and rugged adventure for those seeking something off the beaten path. The Badlands National Park offers a stunning contrast above ground with its dramatic spires and buttes sculpted by wind and water. Watching the sunrise over the Badlands reveals layers of color and texture that painters and photographers dream of capturing. Wildlife spotting here is exhilarating; prairie dogs scurry about, and glimpses of bison herds and bighorn sheep give a true taste of the American frontier. South Dakota’s rich cultural landmarks enrich the natural adventure. Mount Rushmore's iconic presidential faces express a powerful story of American history, while the Crazy Horse Memorial, still under construction, symbolizes respect and tribute to Native American heritage—an ongoing work that invites visitors to contemplate the evolving narrative of this nation. Traveling through South Dakota is not just a sightseeing trip; it’s a deeply immersive experience that combines natural wonder, history, and wildlife viewing. Whether you’re hiking in the parks, learning about indigenous culture at memorials, or simply enjoying a quiet moment in vast landscapes, South Dakota leaves a lasting impression and beckons for a return visit.

The Notch Trail in Badlands National Park
The Notch Trail in Badlands National Park is one of the most fun and beautiful hikes in South Dakota. This trail will take you through a scenic canyon, after which you’ll climb a wooden ladder up a steep hill, followed by a walk along a narrow ledge of about 6-feet wide with a drop-off on one side.
