Book Review - “The Darkest Hour” By Maya Banks

I’ve read a few of Maya Banks’ Contemporary/Erotic Romances and absolutely adore her Historical Romances, so it’s time to try her Romantic Suspense. I read The Darkest Hour, the first KGI book, in 2020, but decided to reread it and opted for the audiobook this time.

Storyline/My Thoughts: The Hero, Ethan, gets help from his brothers, who work for their own security company called KGI, to help rescue his wife. They have been trying to get Ethan to work for them for a while now. They are skeptical at first of the anonymous tip that his wife is alive, but they are willing to help him. After they find her, though, they realize someone wanted to kill Ethan’s wife and determine who. I don’t want to give too much away from the story for readers who haven’t read it yet. I will say this that I enjoyed reading the suspense of the story and finding out why someone wanted to harm Rachel Kelly. The story did feel rushed at times, but I powered through it. This book is the foundation for the series because it introduces all the other characters in KGI. Be prepared to be introduced to them all, and you may fall for one or two or several of them. I know I did.

I give this book 3.5 stars, mainly because I didn’t feel a connection with the main characters. Otherwise, it’s an enjoyable, suspenseful story with heart-pounding moments. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series, which has been on my TBR list for a while.

What to Expect:

✔️Romantic Suspense

✔️High-Stakes Romance

✔️Second Chance

✔️Amnesia

✔️Protective Alpha Heroes

Check out my Full Review of ‘The Darkest Hour’ on my Blog, Goodreads, and Storygraph. Links in IG Bio.

Recommendation: Readers who love reading Military Romantic Suspense.

2025/10/4 Edited to

... Read moreHaving just re-read (or rather, re-listened to!) Maya Banks' 'The Darkest Hour,' I'm reminded why the KGI series has such a strong following. This book truly lays the groundwork for what becomes an incredibly addictive world, filled with highly skilled operatives and the women who challenge and complete them. If you're drawn to the cover featuring a shirtless military veteran, you're absolutely in for the kind of protective, intensely loyal hero that is Ethan Kelly. What I particularly love about this kind of Romantic Suspense is how it masterfully blends heart-pounding action with deep emotional connections. The stakes are incredibly high for Rachel and Ethan, not just from external threats but also from their own past and the devastating secrets Rachel carries. The amnesia trope, which is central to her character, is handled in a way that adds layers of mystery and vulnerability, making you root for her to uncover the truth alongside Ethan. It’s not just a plot device; it’s a catalyst for intense emotional growth and renewed trust. Speaking of intensity, Maya Banks knows how to deliver. The chemistry between Ethan and Rachel is palpable, and while the original review hinted at the genre's erotic undertones, trust me, the passion and connection are definitely there. The 'high-stakes romance' isn't just about danger; it's about the intense emotional and physical bond that forms under extreme pressure. You'll find moments that are truly heart-pounding, not only because of the suspense but also due to the raw emotion and undeniable pull between the main characters. The KGI team, comprised of brothers who are all formidable Navy SEALs or ex-military, adds another layer of intrigue. Each one has a distinct personality, and their unwavering loyalty to family and mission is incredibly appealing. You can easily see why readers, myself included, often find themselves falling for several members of this elite group. This book might be the foundation, but it’s a solid one, introducing you to the kind of heroes and thrilling plots that make the KGI series unforgettable. If you're looking for a military romance with plenty of suspense, a second chance at love, and an alpha male who will stop at nothing to protect his family, then 'The Darkest Hour' is definitely one to pick up. It promises a journey filled with danger, desire, and the unbreakable bonds of love and brotherhood.
