As a Foot Specialist, This Summer Heel Mistake Is Everywhere

I see this every summer.

People think their heels are dry.

But many rough, peeling heels are actually dealing with constant friction from sandals, walking, and standing.

Once I started looking at the cause differently, my routine changed completely.

... Read moreDuring the summer, many of us assume that rough, peeling heels are simply due to dry skin. However, from personal experience and my observations as a foot specialist, a major underlying cause is actually friction. Wearing sandals exposes the heels to constant rubbing from straps and surfaces. Add in barefoot walking or extended periods of standing, and the skin starts reacting defensively by thickening. This thickened skin is often mistaken for dryness but is really a protective barrier formed in response to irritation. Over time, the thick skin becomes rough, flaky, and prone to peeling. Addressing this issue requires more than just moisturizing. It means reducing the friction impact and treating the thickened skin specifically. An effective summer foot care routine that I recommend includes using products like the ClearZal® Reset Duo. The spray helps maintain a fresh, clean environment on the feet, reducing microbial buildup, while the cream softens and smooths thick, rough skin. Using them together supports healthier heels and prevents the cycle of thickened, peeling skin. Additionally, I advise wearing well-fitted sandals with padded straps and avoiding prolonged barefoot walking on rough surfaces when possible. Incorporating gentle exfoliation can also help remove dead skin layers and enhance product absorption. By understanding how friction—not just dryness—affects your heels, you can tailor your foot care routine for better summer comfort and appearance. This approach saved me time and effort and can make a noticeable difference in foot health throughout the hot months.
