it is a makeup bag and this one specifically was a cheap bag, so i'm okay with it getting slightly dirty, but i try my best to keep it as clean as possible!
... Read moreOkay, so we all know the struggle, right? Our makeup bags are like little treasure chests, but sometimes they turn into a graveyard for spilled foundation, eyeshadow fallout, and general gunk! My original post showed you my quick fix with Clorox wipes for my everyday bag, and honestly, those wipes are a lifesaver for tackling those stubborn makeup residue and gunk spots on wipeable surfaces. But what if your bag is different? Or you just want to go a bit deeper?
First off, why even bother? Beyond the obvious aesthetic appeal (nobody wants a dirty black interior when they open their pretty white marble pattern bag!), there’s a real hygiene factor. Our makeup brushes and products go into these bags, and if the bag is dirty, it can harbor bacteria. This bacteria can then transfer to our brushes, and eventually, to our faces, potentially causing breakouts or even infections. Yikes! So, giving your bag a little TLC isn't just about looking good, it's about keeping your skin happy and healthy.
How often should you dive into this cleaning ritual? For an everyday bag like mine that sees a lot of action, I try to do a quick wipe-down weekly or bi-weekly. A thorough deep clean, especially for those trickier fabric bags, can be done monthly or every few months, depending on how messy you are (and trust me, I'm pretty messy!).
Now, let's talk about other cleaning methods, because not all makeup bags are created equal!
For Fabric Bags (Canvas, Cotton): If your bag is machine washable, you've hit the jackpot! First, empty everything out and shake out any loose debris. Then, spot-treat any tough stains with a laundry pre-treater. Pop it into a laundry bag (to protect zippers and embellishments) and wash on a gentle cycle with cold water and a mild detergent. Air dry completely to prevent mildew – never put it in the dryer as it might shrink or damage the lining!
For Wipeable/Vinyl Bags (like my everyday one!): My Clorox wipe trick is perfect here! For a deeper clean than just a quick wipe, you can also use a gentle all-purpose cleaner spray on a microfiber cloth. Make sure to get into all the corners and seams. A little rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad can also work wonders for those really stubborn, dried-on liquid makeup spills. Just be sure to test a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't damage the material.
For Leather or Faux Leather Bags: These need a gentler touch. Avoid harsh chemicals. Use a soft, damp cloth with a tiny bit of mild soap (like baby soap) to gently wipe down the exterior and interior. Follow up with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue, and then dry with a soft, dry cloth. For real leather, a leather conditioner can help keep it supple and prevent cracking.
Beyond the bag itself, a quick win to keep your bag cleaner for longer is to regularly clean your makeup brushes and wipe down your compacts and product packaging. If your brushes are clean, they're less likely to deposit new makeup residue and gunk into your freshly cleaned bag!
Cleaning your makeup bag might seem like a chore, but trust me, opening up a fresh, clean bag to do your makeup just feels so much better! What are your go-to cleaning tips for your makeup bags? I'm always looking for new hacks!
