... Read moreLike many of you, I've been seeing Ana Huang's King of Sin Series popping up on my feeds and my TBR list for ages, and the burning question always was: 'Is it dark romance?' I finally decided to dive headfirst into these books, starting with King of Wrath (and yes, that striking cover with the ring immediately caught my eye!), followed by King of Pride, King of Greed, and King of Sloth, to get a definitive answer for myself and for anyone else curious about the genre.
First things first, let's address the 'dark romance' query. While Ana Huang's books definitely bring the heat and feature powerful, often morally gray heroes, I wouldn't classify the King of Sin Series as traditional 'dark romance.' When I think of dark romance, I picture themes that are much more intense, sometimes bordering on non-consensual elements, extreme power imbalances, or very difficult, triggering content. The King of Sin Series, in my experience, leans more towards very steamy, high-stakes contemporary romance with billionaire or powerful men who are possessive, protective, and undoubtedly alpha. There are often elements of suspense, enemies-to-lovers tropes, and intense emotional journeys, but they typically stay within the bounds of consensual, albeit passionate and sometimes complicated, relationships.
The overall genre for Ana Huang's King of Sin Series is firmly rooted in contemporary romance. Each book focuses on a different couple, often connected by their social circles or family ties, exploring themes of ambition, loyalty, and finding love in unexpected places. For instance, King of Wrath introduces us to Dante and Vivian, a forced marriage trope that sizzles with tension. King of Pride delves into the forbidden office romance between Kai and Isabella. Then there's King of Greed, which brings us to Dominic and Alessandra, and King of Sloth, exploring the unique dynamic between Xavier and Sloane. Each story offers a distinct flavor, but they all share that signature Ana Huang blend of strong-willed heroines and formidable heroes who will stop at nothing for the women they love.
You can definitely expect a high level of steam and delicious tension throughout the series. The heroes are unapologetically dominant and possessive, which is a major draw for many readers. The heroines are often fierce and independent, providing a fantastic push-and-pull dynamic. If you enjoy tropes like forced proximity, fake relationships, forbidden love, and characters with complex backstories, you'll likely find a lot to love here. What you won't find, generally speaking, are the truly dark, disturbing elements that define the darker subgenres of romance.
So, if you're looking for a series that will keep you captivated with its passionate relationships, intriguing plots involving powerful families and businesses, and plenty of swoon-worthy (though sometimes infuriating) male leads, then the King of Sin Series is absolutely worth picking up. It's perfect for fans of contemporary romance who enjoy a good dose of spice and a touch of drama, without venturing into the more extreme depths of dark romance. Give King of Wrath a try; you might just find yourself devouring the entire series!
