Traders beware of fake MEXC Extension on Chrome installed, then the Krypto coins may disappear.
Although in the field of scriptokerrency trading, many users usually operate mainly through mobile phone applications, some of them carry out related activities on personal computers or PCs with the use of specific software, web pages and web browser add-ons. In this news, the latter is again in question.
According to a report by The Hacker News website, it has automatically detected a Chrome web browser add-on that claims to be able to help users trade Krypto Currency coins on the CEX or Centralized Exchange MEXC, which is called MEXC API Automator (ID: pppdfgkfdemgfknfnhpkibbkabhghhfh). The add-on has a developer called "jorjortan142" and has been uploaded on the market for the official Google Chrome Extension download, Chrome Web Store, since September 1. 2025 (2025) and has been available for download to date, with about 29 downloads. It was later revealed that the add-on was dangerous that if the user downloaded it could cause the theft of the API Key, which would lead to the loss of the Cryptokerrency property in the MEXC account. In addition, MEXC also denied that the add-on had anything to do with the website and was prepared to take legal action against all involved.
The person who revealed the danger was a research team from Socket, an expert in cybersecurity tool development. The research team revealed that after the user accidentally installed the add-on, the add-on could access the API management page on MEXC and automatically create the API key in both Access Key and Secret Key, as well as secretly open the Withdrawal Permission. The launch of the add-on hid the Permission behind the UI or User Interface screen by displaying the Permission. Exfiltration of all API keys to bots on the Telegram chat service for hackers behind them to use through HTTPS POST.
In that way, in addition to allowing hackers to withdraw money from the victim's account according to the rights granted, the add-on can take control of the victim's account through the shooting of the script.js script and start the operation immediately by using the victim's money, setting up an automatic transfer to the hacker's account, or taking money from the victim's account.
