Hackers Use Wallpaper Engine on Steam

Hackers have been found using Wallpaper Engine on Steam as a tool to spread malware.

According to a report by the TweakTown website, a research team from Kaspersky, the developer of the popular anti-Virus software, has detected that hackers have hidden malware within a Wallpaper package as a Wallpaper application for use with the Wallpaper Engine software, a software for customizing backgrounds available for download on the Steam platform. Hackers have released the package in the Steam Workshop area, an area open to users in the Steam community to publish add-on content created by the user. These malware latents have tens of thousands of downloads, with downloaders coming from a variety of countries including Germany, India, Singapore, Canada, and Hong Kong.

What makes it possible for hackers to insert malware within such types of backgrounds is that this type of background image is not a normal image like a JPG or PNG file, but a file for running on Windows Executable, and it was created specifically for use on the Wallpaper Engine, because the malware was intended to steal the victim's Steam account and then serve as an intermediary for installing other, more serious malware such as DarkKomet, Lumma Stealer, Crypto Miner, malware per dozen downloads. Malware that converts the victim machine into a Botnet Loader attack network, and Ransomware.

For its part, it will begin after the victim has run the background image file. The application will place a backdoor malware on the victim's machine with parts of the malware from the DarkKomet family. The system library has been installed to work with malware for stealing the victim's Steam account to upload malware backdoors to deceive the next victim.
