I found myself actively avoiding comments and messages about what happened to my neighbors because each new detail seemed to make the story even more difficult to bear. In moments like this, it’s important to recognize the impact that constant exposure to negative updates can have on our mental health. One personal approach that helped me was setting clear boundaries on social media—limiting how often I checked for updates and even temporarily muting conversations. This gave me space to process my feelings without being overwhelmed. Additionally, reaching out to close friends or family for support can make a big difference. Talking about your emotions, even when the situation is painful, helps lessen the burden. I also found that engaging in self-care routines, such as walks, reading, or mindfulness exercises, helped me regain a sense of calm and control. What’s really challenging with stories that worsen over time is the feeling of helplessness. While we may want to help or find solutions, sometimes all we can do is acknowledge the reality and focus on what’s within our power—our own emotional health. Sharing experiences like this one reminds us that we’re not alone in struggling with difficult news, and that it’s okay to take a step back to protect our own well-being.
