I loooved the writing in this book so much I’ve already got another book by her to start tonight! It held my attention so well I finished it in two days!! I probably haven’t read a book that fast since fifth grade when I was in battle of the books.

... Read moreOkay, let's talk about the Check & Mate book cover! Honestly, it's one of the first things that drew me in. The pink background with that subtle checkered pattern just pops, and those delicate pink tulips add such a unique, romantic touch. Seeing the couple holding hands on the chessboard, surrounded by chess pieces, perfectly sets the whimsical yet strategic tone of the story even before you open the first page. It's truly eye-catching and really captures the essence of the rivals-to-lovers trope without giving too much away. I remember picking it up and immediately thinking, 'This looks like my kind of fun read!' The visual storytelling on the cover is just brilliant. Speaking of the story, I mentioned how quickly I flew through this book – seriously, two days! It wasn't just the charming cover that hooked me; Ali Hazelwood's writing style is just so engaging. Her ability to craft witty banter and build palpable chemistry between characters is next-level. The rivals-to-lovers dynamic between Mallory and Nolan was everything I crave in a rom-com. Their chess battles weren't just about strategy; they were a metaphor for their evolving relationship, full of intellectual sparring and unexpected tenderness. I found myself genuinely rooting for them, even when they were trying to outmaneuver each other on the board. Now, about that ending... the OCR mentioned it felt a bit abrupt, and I can definitely see why some might feel that way. It wasn't a cliffhanger, but it definitely left me wanting just a little bit more, like another chapter to really soak in the aftermath. But perhaps that's part of its charm – it leaves you with that lingering, happy sigh rather than tying everything up too neatly. It certainly didn't detract from my overall 4/5 enjoyment of the book. In fact, it made me even more eager to pick up another Ali Hazelwood novel right away, which I did! If you're like me and this book rekindled your love for reading, or you're just a fan of smart, charming rom-coms, Ali Hazelwood is an author you need to explore. Her heroines are always relatable and strong, and her heroes are often these wonderfully complex, slightly nerdy, and utterly swoon-worthy individuals. Beyond the compelling plot of *Check & Mate*, what really stood out was the underlying message about finding your passion and not letting past setbacks define your future. It's more than just a romance; it's a story of self-discovery wrapped in a delightful package. For anyone who was drawn in by the Check & Mate book cover and its promise of a unique romance, I highly recommend diving in. If you've already read it and are looking for more books with that perfect blend of rivals-to-lovers, strong female leads, and a touch of STEM-inspired charm, definitely check out Ali Hazelwood's other works like 'The Love Hypothesis' or 'Love on the Brain.' They all have that signature blend of humor, heart, and intelligent romance that makes her books so incredibly addictive. This one really was a joy to read, and I hope it sparks your reading passion too!
