I’ve traveled for weddings since 2015. I went to full time travel work in 2018 (meaning over half of my weddings were travel). Travel vendors know what they’re doing (mostly). Its easy to find permits. Its easy to find locations. Especially if you have a nice community to lean on.

Since 2015, traveling to photograph weddings has evolved into a specialized niche, requiring knowledge of local regulations and permit processes. Popular destinations like Portland, Oregon; Chicago; the Olympic Peninsula; Orcas Island, Washington; the Catskills in New York; Nantucket; Obidos in Portugal; and San Diego highlight the vast array of stunning settings couples choose for their special day. One common theme among these locations is the relative ease of obtaining permits with the help of experienced travel vendors, who often have established connections with local authorities and communities. These vendors provide invaluable support by scouting locations that offer both aesthetic appeal and practical permits, reducing the logistical burden on photographers and couples alike. Building a supportive community is key to successful travel weddings. Photographers often rely on networks of local vendors, such as florists, coordinators, and venues, to ensure smooth operations. This teamwork facilitates seamless experiences even in distant or less familiar settings. Engagement sessions and elopements, like those on the Oregon Coast and the Olympic Peninsula, further demonstrate the growing popularity of intimate, destination-driven celebrations. Photographers who embrace this trend not only capture beautiful moments but also immerse themselves in the local culture and scenery, adding depth and authenticity to their work. Overall, being a travel wedding photographer demands adaptability, planning, and community support. Those who master these elements enjoy the rewards of capturing love in some of the world’s most breathtaking places while navigating the complexities of travel logistics and permit acquisition.
