If you want to beat the crowds for photo sessions you have to get up at the crack of dawn. I was in town for a wedding down in New Jersey and happened to be staying with one of my best friends, Emma. It had been awhile since I had updated her and her husbands photos so we decided to do something a bit different than we have before. So the day of the wedding we got up at 5AM and headed out to have some of the streets in Manhattan to ourselves. I’ve always loved doing NYC couples sessions at sunrise because the streets are a lot emptier and you generally have more of the “iconic” spots to yourself.

I have a list of places in New York I’d love to shoot, and we didn’t have time to hit all of them that morning. We did however get to experience the high line almost completely to ourselves for about fifteen minutes. I’m heading back up to the city in a few weeks and have several sessions while there. I’m hoping to be able to hit up some of the other locations I want to shoot in around town. Like one of the observation decks even though I’m terrified of heights, but the photos would be so pretty at twilight.

The city, usually bustling and crowded, transforms into a serene environment with calm streets and soft natural light perfect for photos. The High Line, a popular elevated park, is a favorite spot because it combines urban architecture with greenery, providing rich visual contrasts ideal for romantic or intimate shots. Planning a photo session at dawn requires preparation. Consider checking sunrise times and weather conditions in advance to maximize natural lighting. Dressing in layers is recommended since early mornings can be chilly, especially in spring or fall. Photographers should also scout locations ahead of time to ensure they know the best vantage points while the area is quiet. Twilight photography atop observation decks presents a fantastic challenge and reward, capturing the city’s glowing skyline at golden hour or blue hour. While heights may be intimidating, these elevated spots provide breathtaking backdrops that add drama and depth to couples' portraits. Safety is paramount, so ensure secure placement of equipment and respect venue regulations. Mini blog notes like "Mini Blog-NYC couples session" and signage such as "PARKIN", "NO PARKOIND" remind us that urban photography often includes incidental street elements, which can add authenticity if composed thoughtfully. Overall, NYC couples sessions at sunrise offer an unbeatable chance to enjoy iconic backdrops with fewer distractions, creating heartfelt and memorable images to cherish for years.
