Stepping onto that stage at the Chan Centre felt like a dream, but getting there involved a lot more than just showing up! You'll want to look your best, but comfort is also crucial. For makeup, think long-wear and waterproof – you might shed a few happy tears! For hair, consider styles that work well under your graduation cap; a low bun or loose waves are often good choices. And those shoes? While heels might look great, you'll be doing a lot of standing and walking, so a comfortable pair is a lifesaver. Trust me, my feet were thankful I thought ahead. One of the biggest hurdles for many is picking up your regalia. At UBC, the line can get pretty long, as I experienced! Make sure you arrive well before your designated time slot. Your regalia usually includes a gown, a cap (mortarboard), and a hood. The hood color often signifies your faculty or degree, like my music school one. Practice putting it on beforehand, especially the hood, so you're not fumbling with it on the big day. It helps to have a friend check if it's sitting correctly for those group photos. Once you’re robed up, it’s all about capturing those memories. Coordinate early with your friends and family for photo opportunities. Iconic spots around the University of British Columbia campus, like stone buildings or scenic viewpoints, are perfect backdrops. Don't forget to get shots holding your diploma (even if it's just the scroll before the official one arrives!) and any beautiful bouquets of flowers you might receive. These are the keepsakes you’ll cherish forever. As for the ceremony itself, the procession into the Chan Centre was truly surreal. Pay attention to your procession number and listen for instructions. When it's your turn to walk across the stage, take a moment to soak it all in. It goes by incredibly fast! I barely remember my name being called, but the feeling of accomplishment was immense. You might not get your physical degree at that exact moment; often, a representative diploma is handed out on stage, with the official one mailed later. Finally, post-ceremony celebrations are just as important. After the formal event, my family and I took many more photos. It's a wonderful chance for a proper family photo with everyone dressed up. And for those looking for unique souvenirs, I even spotted some adorable graduation teddy bears in the bookstore – a cute way to remember the day! Celebrating with good food and loved ones, as I did, is the perfect way to cap off years of hard work. Remember, this day is for you, so enjoy every single moment!
