Here are some journal supplies that is a must-have for me!
Glue tapes: I love Tombow’s Pit Air glue tapes! I recently ran out of the normal size ones, and my local stationery store didn’t carry the refills for quite some time…so I’m currently using the Pit Air mini! it works the same except it’s a lot smaller. It’s still super strong and easy to use, and also refillable!
Washi tapes: Gridded washi tapes are soooo useful! I like using them to layer above solid washi tapes or some stickers, just to add some texture~ and also the Kokuyo washi tape cutter is a must for a clean cut!
Brush pens: Pentel Brush sign pen and Kuretake Zig brushable are my top brush pens to use, they make nice muted colors like pale brown and blue, which I love! Also, their brush tips are good quality! They don’t fray as easily compared to others.
Markers: besides for highlighting school notes, I love Zebra Mildliners for journaling when I want to add a pop of color or have a color theme to go with!
Writing pens: Zebra Sarasa Vintage pens are my favorite to write in my journal, they’re super smooth, and I love using dark colored inks to write!

One game-changer for my aesthetic journaling has definitely been stickers. My journal wouldn't be complete without them! I mean, who doesn't love a cute bear sticker or a delicate floral accent? I usually keep a stash of different types: some transparent ones for a subtle look, matte paper stickers for layering, and even some vinyl ones for durability on my journal cover. I find using them is incredibly easy to instantly add a theme to a page or simply fill a blank space beautifully. They're perfect for emphasizing important bullet points or just adding a whimsical touch. Don't be afraid to layer them with your favorite patterned adhesive tape for extra depth!
If you’re just starting out or looking to refine your collection, thinking about creating your own aesthetic journaling kit can be super helpful. You don't need everything all at once! I’d suggest starting with:
A few reliable writing pens: Like those super smooth gel pens or even a fine liner.
A brush pen or two: Great for adding beautiful hand-lettered titles or pops of color.
Some decorative elements: At least one roll of patterned adhesive tape (gridded is my go-to!) and a small pack of stickers that match your current aesthetic.
A good adhesive: My trusty glue tape is essential for sticking photos or ephemera without causing wrinkles.
A few highlighters or markers: For adding color accents or creating themed palettes.
Choosing a few key items that you genuinely love and will use often is far better than having a huge collection you rarely touch!
What I've learned is that it's all about how you combine these tools. For instance, I love using my brush pens for bold headings, then outlining them with a fine-tipped gel pen. The beautiful muted colors from my Kuretake Zig Brushables and Pentel Brush Sign Pens are perfect for this. Then, I’ll use my Zebra Mildliners to create soft color blocks or highlight important dates, ensuring everything has a cohesive feel. And those Sarasa Vintage pens? They just add such a sophisticated touch to my writing, making even mundane notes feel special. Choosing the right notebook is also a foundational step for an aesthetic journal. I personally look for notebooks with smooth, slightly thicker paper that can handle various inks from my brush pens and markers without feathering or bleeding through. A dotted or grid layout often provides a subtle guide for writing and layout without being too intrusive, allowing my creative elements to truly shine.
To make sure my supplies last, I keep my patterned adhesive tapes organized in a small drawer and always cap my pens tightly. It really helps preserve their quality and keeps my creative space neat. Experiment, play around, and don't be afraid to develop your own unique aesthetic. That's the real magic of journaling!
