Is a mechanical keyboard worth it for school?

This is the Kzzi i75V2 keyboard that I got recently for myself as a graduation gift 🙂‍↕️ I actually have been debating between the pebble and this for a long time and went ahead to get this instead because of the shape and the typing sound.

I’ve been wanting to invest in a mechanical keyboard because I’ve always like the tactile feel of keyboards. it feels so much nicer compared to my macbook air keyboard, even though I still like my macbook air’s

overall typing experience of this keyboard is fantastic. took me a while to work around some settings compatible with mac but once everything’s figured out, the transition is actually very smooth. typing drafts with this keyboard feels so pleasant, it just feels effortless to press on the keys. and the sound is not anything like those annoying keyboard sounds you’d hear in public, I mean the obnoxiously loud typing noises.

portability-wise, it’s considered small but as a girly who brings her macbook and iPad to campus everday, it’s actually super heavy… So I’m keeping it at home for working on my discussions and general work.

if you have the extra money, I highly recommend one. if you take care of it, it can last for a long time and you can use it for work too!

... Read moreAs a student, figuring out what tech is genuinely useful versus just a cool gadget can be tough, especially when it comes to something like a mechanical keyboard. After using my Kzzi i75V2 for a bit, I've realized it's not just about the satisfying clicks; there's a lot more to consider for student life, and I wanted to share my broader thoughts for anyone else debating this purchase. First off, let's talk about the *why*. Why would a student even consider a mechanical keyboard over a standard laptop keyboard or a basic wireless one? For me, it came down to comfort and efficiency. When you're typing countless essays, taking detailed notes, or even diving into coding projects, the tactile feedback and responsiveness of a mechanical keyboard can significantly reduce finger fatigue. It truly feels like each keystroke is registered with purpose, which can speed up your typing and even make long study sessions more enjoyable. There are different switch types, too – some offer a quiet, smooth press (great for dorms or libraries), while others have a distinct 'click' that some people, myself included, find incredibly satisfying (but maybe not for public spaces!). My Kzzi i75V2, for example, has a lovely sound that isn't obnoxiously loud, which is a huge plus. Then there's the durability factor, which is a big deal for a student budget. While the initial investment might seem high, many mechanical keyboards, including popular brands, are built to last. Unlike membrane keyboards that can wear out quickly, mechanical switches are designed for millions of keystrokes. This means your board could potentially last you through your entire degree and beyond, making it a worthwhile long-term investment. Plus, the ability to customize keycaps and even switches means you can refresh its look and feel down the line, keeping it personal and functional for years to come. Connecting it to my MacBook Air or even my iPad for extended typing sessions has been seamless and has really elevated my workspace at home. However, it's not all rainbows and pleasant clicks. The biggest hurdle for students, as I quickly learned, is portability. My Kzzi i75V2, while compact for a mechanical keyboard, is still a noticeable addition to my backpack alongside my MacBook Air and iPad. If you're someone who moves between lectures, libraries, and study groups daily, the weight and bulk can be a real deterrent. For those constantly on the go, a smaller form factor (like a 60% or 65% keyboard) or even a lightweight wireless option might be more practical. I've personally decided to keep mine mostly at my home setup for dedicated study and work, which works perfectly for my discussion posts and deep-dive assignments. Another point often overlooked is the noise level, especially if you live in a dorm or frequent quiet study areas. While I love the sound of my Kzzi i75V2, some mechanical switches are notoriously loud. If you're sharing a space, opting for quieter switches like 'silent reds' or 'silent browns' is a considerate choice. Ultimately, deciding if a mechanical keyboard is 'worth it' for you as a student comes down to your personal study habits, how much you value typing comfort, and your budget. If you spend hours typing and have a dedicated study space, it can truly enhance your productivity and comfort. If portability and absolute silence are your top priorities, you might need to research specific models or reconsider. But if you have the extra money and are looking for a significant upgrade to your typing experience, I'd say give it a serious thought – it might just be the study essential you never knew you needed.
