Hey everyone! If you're like me, you love spending time outdoors, especially at awesome events like the Hillbilly Jam in Maggie Valley. But whether you're at a festival or just exploring local trails, staying safe in cold weather is super important. I've learned a few things over the years, and I wanted to share my personal protective factors to ensure you have a fantastic, safe experience. First off, let's talk about dressing properly and understanding wind chill. This is probably the biggest game-changer. You might think it's just 'cold,' but wind chill can make it feel much colder and significantly increase your risk of frostbite or hypothermia. Always check the forecast, not just for temperature, but for wind speed. When dressing, layers are your best friend. Start with a moisture-wicking base, add insulating layers like fleece or wool, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer shell. Don't forget your extremities – a warm hat, gloves, and thick socks are non-negotiable. I remember one time, I almost skipped gloves, and my hands were freezing within minutes. Lesson learned! Next up: packing a sugary snack or drink. Your body burns more calories to stay warm in cold weather, so keeping your energy levels up is crucial. Sugary snacks, like granola bars, dried fruit, or even some candy, provide quick energy. Hot drinks in a thermos, like cocoa or tea, can also help warm you from the inside out and keep you hydrated. Dehydration is a risk even in cold weather, so don't forget to drink water regularly, too. My go-to is usually a hot apple cider! Another protective factor is setting a realistic goal for how long you want to be outside. It's easy to get caught up in the fun, but pushing yourself too long in cold conditions can be dangerous. Listen to your body! If you start feeling overly cold, numb, or just generally unwell, it’s time to head indoors or warm up. Having a plan for breaks and knowing your limits is smart. Especially if the ground is getting a bit muddier, as I saw recently when I was making this video, conditions can change quickly and make outdoor activities more strenuous. Now, while we're talking about staying safe outdoors, it's also good to be familiar with all kinds of symptoms that might indicate trouble. For instance, while we're focused on cold, knowing symptoms of things like heat stroke (even if it's not super common in freezing temps) is part of being generally prepared. If you're exerting yourself heavily, even in cooler weather, and dressed too warmly, you can still overheat. Look out for dizziness, confusion, or excessive sweating. However, for cold weather, primarily watch for signs of hypothermia (shivering, confusion, slurred speech) and frostbite (numbness, white or grayish skin). Ultimately, being prepared means you can fully enjoy your outdoor adventures, whether it's the lively atmosphere of Hillbilly Jam or a quiet hike. Stay warm, stay fueled, and stay aware of your surroundings!

HILLBILLY COBBLER
This cobbler has been made the same way for generations — six ingredients, no mixer, no measuring anything complicated. The name tells you everything about where it came from and nothing about how good it tastes. The people who grew up eating it never needed a fancier version. 🍒 🔥 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗣𝗘 ↓ Hi
