Some officials handle the audits with professionalism and understanding, recognizing the importance of the First Amendment. However, others may react defensively, sometimes escalating situations unnecessarily. A common term that has emerged in these encounters is 'Karen,' describing individuals who confront auditors aggressively or attempt to suppress their recording rights without a legal basis. From my experience, staying calm and knowing your rights is essential when conducting or encountering First Amendment audits. Documenting these interactions can provide valuable insights and sometimes expose violations of public rights, which could prompt greater accountability and transparency. Moreover, these audits serve an educational purpose. They inform the public about their rights and the boundaries of authority in public spaces. Despite sometimes tense interactions, the core goal remains the same—to uphold the freedoms guaranteed under the First Amendment and to ensure these rights are respected by all parties involved.
