High Calorie Foods to Keep Weight on During Season
Due to busy schedules and travel, I find my athletes tend to struggle to keep muscle on during the season. Here are some tips to add calorically dense foods to your daily fueling routine! #sportsnutrition #dietitian #musclegain #athletenutrition #nutritiontips
Hey fellow athletes! I totally get it – keeping your weight and muscle mass up when your schedule is packed with training, games, and travel can feel like an Olympic sport in itself. I've been there, and it's frustrating to feel like you're constantly fighting to maintain your strength. But trust me, fueling your body smartly makes all the difference! The key isn't just eating *more*, but eating smarter with calorie-dense, nutrient-rich foods. These are the foods that pack a big energy punch without making you feel overly stuffed. My go-to strategy is to sneak extra calories into meals and snacks you're already enjoying. Let's dive into some of my favorite ways to boost that calorie count, drawing from some of the gems I've discovered: Avocados & Healthy Fats: You know I'm a huge fan of adding guacamole or sliced avocados to pretty much anything – salads, tacos, burritos. But don't stop there! Mash some onto your morning toast, blend a quarter into your smoothie for extra creaminess and healthy fats, or even use it as a base for a rich salad dressing. Those good fats are essential for sustained energy and overall health. Olive Oil Power-Up: This is a super easy win! Drizzling extra virgin olive oil over your roasted veggies, pasta, rice, or even soups is a fantastic way to add healthy fats and calories without much effort. I often finish my dishes with a generous pour right before serving – it adds flavor too! Dried Fruits for Sweet Energy: Instead of just a few grapes, grab a handful of dried cranberries, raisins, or apricots. They're concentrated sources of energy and fiber. I love tossing them into my Greek yogurt, oatmeal, or even a mixed green salad for a sweet and chewy contrast. They're perfect for a quick energy boost pre- or post-workout. Nuts & Seeds Galore: Chopped nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans) are my secret weapon! Sprinkle them on salads, blend them into smoothies for a thicker texture and protein boost, or mix them into your morning oatmeal. Nut butters (peanut, almond, cashew) are equally amazing. Spread them on fruit, rice cakes, or add a spoonful to your post-workout shake. They’re packed with healthy fats, protein, and fiber – a winning combo for muscle maintenance and satiety. Beyond these, think about full-fat dairy options like whole milk or full-fat Greek yogurt – they offer more calories, protein, and nutrients than their low-fat counterparts. For grains, consider hearty options like quinoa, brown rice, and oats. And don't forget your protein sources! Lean meats like chicken and especially beef (which is a fantastic source of iron and easily digestible protein, great for athletes!) can be incorporated into larger portions. Fatty fish like salmon and even eggs are also excellent calorie and nutrient providers. For busy days, high-calorie healthy snacks are your best friend. Think trail mix, a banana with a big dollop of almond butter, or a homemade smoothie packed with fruit, protein powder, full-fat yogurt, and a handful of spinach. Preparing these ahead of time makes all the difference when you're rushing between commitments. Remember, it's about being consistent. Don't stress if you miss a meal, just make sure your next one is packed with nutrient-dense goodness. By strategically adding these calorie-rich foods, you'll feel stronger, recover faster, and maintain that hard-earned muscle throughout your demanding season!
