Chick Fil A Recs from a sports dietitian!
Some of my favorite CFA options for my busy athletes who need to fuel on the run!! #chickfila #athletenutrition #sportsfood #registereddietitian #collegeathlete
It's tough being a busy athlete, isn't it? Between classes, practice, and games, sometimes grabbing a quick meal is the only option, and Chick-fil-A often comes to the rescue! I used to stress about what to order, thinking it was impossible to find anything "healthy" or suitable for my training. But after learning a few tips, I realized that with smart choices, Chick-fil-A can totally fit into an athlete's fueling plan. The key is understanding what your body needs and *when*. For pre-workout, we're looking for easily digestible carbs for energy, with some lean protein. Post-workout, it's all about replenishing those energy stores and getting protein for muscle repair. Let's dive into some of my go-to Chick-fil-A options, broken down by when you need them. 2-3 Hours Pre-Workout: This is your chance for a more substantial meal that will sustain you. I find the Egg White Grill with a Yogurt Parfait is a fantastic combo – you get protein from the egg whites and yogurt, plus complex carbs from the English muffin and granola. Another great choice is the Chicken Noodle Soup paired with a CFA Cool Wrap (ask for dressing on the side to control fat). Or, a simple Grilled Chicken Sandwich is always a winner; it's lean and provides good energy without feeling heavy. These options give you that sustained energy without a sugar crash. 30 Minutes Pre-Workout: If you're really pressed for time and just need a quick boost, focus on simple carbs. An Applesauce Pouch or a Fruit Cup are perfect for this. They provide quick energy without a lot of fiber or fat that could upset your stomach during exercise. I always keep these in mind for last-minute fuel. Post-Workout Recovery: This is where you rebuild! You need protein to repair muscles and carbs to refuel. The Hash Brown Scramble Burrito or Hash Brown Scramble Bowl are excellent, providing a good mix of carbs and protein. I also love the Egg White Grill again here, or a Berry Parfait with Granola for a lighter, refreshing option with protein and natural sugars. The Grilled Chicken Sandwich, CFA Cool Wrap, and Chicken Noodle Soup remain solid choices for similar reasons as pre-workout – they're balanced. And you can't go wrong with Grilled Nuggets – they're pure lean protein and very versatile. Now, I often hear people ask, "Is Chick-fil-A really healthy?" My answer is, it *can be*! It's all about making informed choices. Avoiding heavily fried items and sugary drinks is a good start. For example, instead of a regular soda, opt for water, unsweetened iced tea, or a diet lemonade to stay hydrated. And what about fries? While they aren't ideal for pre/post-workout fueling due to their fat content, I won't lie, sometimes a small order can be a nice treat! It's about balance and recognizing it's not a primary fueling source. For those looking for GLP-1 meal ideas or just generally aiming for higher protein and lower carb options, Chick-fil-A has choices too. Focus on the grilled nuggets, the Egg White Grill (hold the cheese if you want to dial back fat), and salads with grilled chicken (dressing on the side, of course). These choices help maximize protein intake while keeping other macros in check. Ultimately, Chick-fil-A is a convenient spot for athletes on the go. By knowing what to pick, you can fuel your body effectively and keep performing at your best, even when time is tight!
