I'm 184 pages in, and while I'm enjoying the book, so far, I also am kinda bored. I'm getting closer to the actual Hunger Games, but I'm just like, "Damn, get to the Games already."
Little summary:
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is the first prequel to the original Hunger Games trilogy told most through Coriolanus Snow's POV. He's mentoring District 12's Lucy Gray Baird, who's from the Covey, and she sings, therefore charming her way to the people. No one really believes she'll win, so there's the underdog story, and Coriolanus is rolling his eyes at her at first. Not because of her personally, but because, unless you've been under a rock the last 16 years, then you'll know that in the Hunger Games universe, District 12 is the poorest district. The Capital is the richest.
Like I said at the beginning, I'm enjoying it, but I am a little bored. I'll keep going, though. I'll give it a chance.

Read moreIf you're a fan of the Hunger Games universe, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes offers a fascinating backstory that deepens your understanding of how the dystopian world and its key characters came to be. Centered on Coriolanus Snow, who later becomes the authoritarian President in the original trilogy, this prequel sheds light on his early life and the complex motivations behind his character.
Lucy Gray Baird adds a fresh dynamic to the narrative. As a charismatic member of the Covey, her singing captivates audiences despite coming from the poverty-stricken District 12. This contrast between the affluent Capital and impoverished Districts highlights the socio-political themes prevalent throughout the series. While the story builds towards the notorious Hunger Games, the focus on mentorship and character development brings a new emotional depth.
Readers new to this book might notice a slower pace early on, as the narrative sets up important background details. However, the tension ramps up as Coriolanus and Lucy Gray navigate the challenges ahead. The novel's exploration of power, survival, and human nature enriches the Hunger Games mythos beyond the typical action-driven storyline.
