really missing Malta rn

Oh, Malta! Even thinking about our family trip in December 2022 brings back such warm memories. It truly is an island gem that captured all our hearts. After spending a whole month exploring, I can't recommend it enough, especially if you're looking for a unique travel experience steeped in history and culture. Many people think of Malta as a summer destination, but December offers a truly magical atmosphere. Imagine strolling through a historic coastal city like Valletta, its magnificent stone fortifications bathed in the soft glow of Christmas lights. The ornate buildings, especially the churches and cathedrals, are often adorned with festive decorations, and seeing a beautiful church facade illuminated at night with a nativity scene was simply breathtaking. The air was crisp, the crowds were lighter than peak season, and there was a wonderful festive buzz. From charming street markets to cozy cafes, it felt like stepping into a holiday postcard. We found ourselves enjoying the festive spirit on many a festive outdoor street, admiring the decorations and feeling the warmth of the local community. Our family loved staying in various places across the Maltese islands. Valletta, the capital, is an absolute must-see. Its grand architecture and rich history are captivating, and you can spend days just wandering its narrow streets, discovering hidden gems. Don't miss the Upper Barrakka Gardens for stunning harbor views, or St. John's Co-Cathedral, which is beyond impressive inside. Beyond Valletta, we ventured to Mdina, the 'Silent City.' Walking through its ancient gates and along the quiet, winding alleys felt like stepping back in time. The views from the city walls, with distant towns and church domes dotting the landscape, are incredible. And of course, no trip to Malta is complete without exploring the sister islands of Gozo and Comino. We took a ferry to Gozo and were enchanted by its rugged landscapes, serene beaches, and ancient temples. The Azure Window might be gone, but the natural beauty, like Dwejra Bay, remains. Comino, with its famous Blue Lagoon, is a paradise for swimming and snorkeling, even if it's a bit chilly in December – though some brave souls still took a dip! What truly made our trip special was connecting with our Maltese heritage and immersing ourselves in the local culture. My mom's side of the family is from here, and it was so fascinating to see where my grandfather was born. The Maltese language, with its unique blend of Arabic, Italian, and English influences, is quite a challenge, but even trying to pick up a few phrases like 'Grazzi' (thank you) or 'Bonġu' (good morning) was a fun way to engage with locals. The food is another highlight! You absolutely have to try pastizzi – flaky pastries filled with ricotta or peas – from a local pastizzeria. Ftira, a traditional Maltese flatbread, is also delicious. We learned so much about the island's history, from the Knights of St. John to ancient megalithic temples, just by exploring and talking to people. A key takeaway from our travels was to always be respectful of local customs and traditions. Malta is a beautiful country with a proud heritage, and embracing that with an open mind makes for a much richer experience. From its stunning coastal cities and fortifications to its vibrant Christmas festivities and warm people, Malta truly offers something for everyone. It's a place we're definitely longing to revisit!
