Burgers for dinner 🥹
Losing a job can hit harder than you ever expect, leaving you feeling adrift and, for me, often battling waves of depression. It's a heavy, isolating feeling, and some days, simply getting out of bed feels like an insurmountable task. Last night was one of those nights. After a particularly draining day, all I could manage was curling up on the couch, plate of fries and a juicy burger in hand, watching TV to drown out the noise in my head. This isn't just about the food; it's about that temporary, much-needed escape. That comfort burger and crispy chips became a small, warm hug for my soul, a brief respite from the constant worry and sadness. It’s those moments when you just let yourself 'be,' indulging in something simple that offers a fleeting sense of comfort, even if it's just for an hour or so. The overlay text on my photo, describing eating due to depression after losing a job, truly captured the essence of that evening. While a comfort burger isn't a long-term solution for depression or job loss, it's okay to acknowledge these moments. It's okay to lean into what brings you a tiny bit of solace when everything else feels overwhelming. I’ve been trying to find small, manageable ways to be kind to myself during this period. Sometimes it’s allowing myself these 'burger and chill' nights. Other times, it’s forcing myself to take a short walk, even if I don't feel like it, or reaching out to a friend for a quick chat. Navigating the aftermath of a job loss while dealing with depression is a rollercoaster. The thought of 'what next?' can be paralyzing. For anyone else going through something similar, please know you’re not alone. It's okay to feel overwhelmed, and it's okay to seek comfort in small ways. I've started compiling a mental list of low-energy self-care acts for when I feel this low: a warm bath, listening to a favorite podcast while lying down, or yes, ordering that favorite comfort food. What are your go-to comfort foods or small rituals when life gets tough? Sharing these little coping strategies can make a big difference as we navigate these challenging times together.
