Every time I stretch MJs hair, I’m like…

Every time I stretch MJs hair, I’m like “Okay Rapunzel!” and then her curls snap back like, “Relax ma’am… humble yourself.” And honestly? Same, girl. Same.

We’re deep in this curly hair journey over here, learning her texture as it changes, figuring out what products actually keep moisture in, and realizing that shrinkage isn’t a problem… it’s just part of how healthy curls work.

I grew up perming and straightening my hair, so this whole world of curls, coils, and shrinkage is something I’m learning with my kids. What I thought was “hair not acting right” is actually a sign of hydration, definition, and strength. No one told us that growing up.

Lately I’ve also been wondering: What age did you let your kids get their first official curly haircut or shape-up? I’m starting to think about when it’s time to get MJs curls shaped so it grows even healthier because these little layers are doing what THEY want.

One thing I’ve learned: shrinkage can be dramatic, but it’s also a sign that her curls are happy, moisturized, and thriving. And honestly, I’ll take the pettiness if it means her hair is healthy.

Drop your curly kid tips below, especially around first haircuts and shaping. I’m all ears!

... Read moreNavigating the world of curly hair can be both a rewarding and sometimes confusing journey, especially when caring for toddlers with natural curls. One key aspect that many parents notice is shrinkage – that remarkable curl pattern that causes hair to spring back shorter than it might appear when stretched. While shrinkage can seem 'petty' or frustrating, it's actually a sign of well-hydrated, elastic, and healthy curls. This characteristic can vary dramatically depending on hair type, moisture levels, and care routines. If you've grown up with straightened or permed hair, the curly hair journey involves unlearning misconceptions about what 'healthy' hair looks like. Often, shedding, shrinkage, and coil patterns are misunderstood but are natural indicators of vibrant, robust hair. For toddlers like MJs, understanding hair texture means accepting and working with its unique behavior rather than against it. When it comes to products, moisturizing is key. Look for leave-in conditioners, creams, or oils specially formulated for curly hair that enhance curl definition while locking in moisture. Avoiding harsh sulfates and alcohol-heavy products can help prevent drying and frizz, which contributes to shrinkage appearing more intense or curls becoming brittle. Many parents also face the question: When is the right time for a toddler's first curly haircut or shape-up? The answer varies based on hair growth patterns and personal preference, but typically, it’s recommended to wait until the curls have developed a consistent pattern and the child is comfortable. Regular trims help remove split ends and nourish new growth, encouraging healthier and more manageable curls. Engaging with other parents of curly-haired kids, such as through hashtags like #CurlyHairKids or #ToddlerCurls, can provide valuable support and tips tailored to specific curl types. Remember, each child’s hair journey is unique, and embracing the unique traits—like those playful shrinkage 'snaps'—is part of embracing their natural beauty and building confidence. In summary, healthy curly hair care for toddlers revolves around hydration, understanding shrinkage as a positive sign, selecting the right products, and thoughtful haircuts. Embracing these moments encourages a deeper appreciation of natural hair textures and fosters bonding through shared learning and growth.
