Activating the Afro!!

My curl confession: I’m healing parts of myself by watching her love her hair.

They’re calling it activating the bob… and over here, we’re activating the Afro. Because car seats are made for safety , not Afros, her hair always takes the shape of the seat when she hops out. So I’ve been teaching her what to do next, fluff it, shake it out, and step back into her body with confidence.

This is her Afro post–braid takedown, and I’ll let her rock it for a few days before wash day comes around. Every time I ask how she wants to wear her hair after braids, her answer is always the same: “Like this.”

And watching her love her curls so freely has been unexpectedly healing for me. It feels like I’m vicariously rewriting my own curl story, replacing what I was taught with patience, curiosity, and joy.

There’s something about Curly Mom in Training life, learning curl care and raising kids to love what grows out of their head.

Now your turn.

Drop your curl confession below

How can we learn and grow together?

... Read moreAs someone who has navigated the beautiful but sometimes challenging journey of caring for natural Afro-textured hair, I can truly relate to the experience of "activating the Afro." After a long day spent in a car seat, curls can become flattened and lose their natural shape, which can sometimes be frustrating for both kids and parents. What’s been a game changer for me is embracing simple steps like fluffing and gently shaking out the hair right after it’s been compressed. This not only helps restore the Afro’s fullness but also empowers children to take pride in their hair’s natural texture. I've found that consistency in post-braid care is key. Allowing the hair to air out and be worn freely for a few days lets the curls settle into a healthy pattern, reducing breakage and promoting natural volume. It’s important to teach kids to love their hair as it grows, not just when it’s freshly washed or styled. Affirming their curls daily builds confidence and helps rewrite any negative hair narratives they might have encountered. For parents, the process can be unexpectedly healing, as it connects us to our own hair stories and opens pathways for patience and joy. Using the phrase "activating the Afro" adds a sense of ritual and celebration to hair care, turning routine maintenance into a moment of bonding and self-expression. If you’re a "Curly Mom in Training" like me, I encourage you to invite your children into their hair journey with curiosity and excitement. Let them choose how they want to wear their hair, whether it’s in braids, an Afro, or another style that makes them feel confident. Sharing this experience together fosters a loving relationship with natural hair that will last a lifetime.
