SAVE this before your England family trip 🇬🇧
If I could redo ONE thing about our day at Hever Castle & Gardens, we would’ve given ourselves way more time.
I knew we were coming for the castle and the gorgeous gardens, but I underestimated just how much there was for the kids to actually DO.
We got to peek at the play areas, water fun, playground and more of the grounds, but we didn’t have nearly enough time to let them fully enjoy everything. And you know how that goes with kids, you can’t exactly say, “Look how fun that is! Okay, let’s leave.” 😂
So here’s my mom-friend advice: don’t treat Hever Castle like a quick castle stop.
Give yourself the day.
Let them run. Let them play. Wander the gardens without watching the clock. Stop by the water. And leave room in your itinerary for the things you didn’t even realize were there.
That’s probably my biggest lesson from traveling with three generations this summer too: sometimes the best family days happen when we stop trying to squeeze in more and give ourselves time to actually enjoy where we already are.
Thank you @hever_castle for hosting our family and being part of Three Generations. One Summer.

Visiting Hever Castle with children offers more than just a glimpse into 600 years of history—it’s an immersive experience that combines education, play, and outdoor adventure. From my own family travel perspective, one of the best decisions we made was to allow plenty of time to explore every corner of the estate. The castle itself is stunning, steeped in history, but it’s the expansive gardens and fun kid-friendly features that truly make it a standout spot for families. The grounds include acres of gardens to wander freely, where children can spot wildlife and interact with nature in a relaxed environment. Water features and splash areas add a playful touch, especially on warm days, while playgrounds offer safe spaces for little adventurers to burn off energy. These varied activities make Hever Castle ideal for families with kids of different ages and interests. One key takeaway is to avoid rushing. When traveling with children, it’s tempting to fit many sights into a single day, but Hever Castle proves that sometimes the best memories come from unhurried exploration. Letting the kids run, play, and discover at their own pace creates a more enjoyable and stress-free experience for everyone. In addition, the castle occasionally hosts events and interactive displays that enhance the educational value of the visit. Checking the calendar ahead of time can help you plan your visit to coincide with special family-friendly activities. Finally, practical tips include bringing comfortable walking shoes, packing snacks or planning for a picnic on the lawn, and checking the weather so you can fully enjoy outdoor features. Many families also find it helpful to arrive early and plan to stay through the afternoon to make the most of the day. Overall, Hever Castle & Gardens in Kent is a hidden gem for UK family travel, providing a perfect balance of history, nature, and fun. Saving this site on your England itinerary will ensure a memorable and enriching day for both kids and adults.
