Avocados often surprise dog owners because while the flesh is usually safe in moderation, the skin and pit contain persin, a toxin that can cause vomiting and diarrhea, and the pit poses a serious choking hazard. Cherries are another hidden danger; their pits, stems, and leaves contain cyanide compounds that interfere with oxygen transport in the bloodstream. This can lead to breathing difficulties and collapse if ingested. Unripe tomatoes and tomato plants contain solanine, a substance toxic to dogs that can result in stomach upset, weakness, and lethargy. One challenge is that symptoms may not appear immediately but can show several hours later, often leading owners to miss the early warning signs. In case your dog eats something toxic, timing is critical. The first hour after ingestion can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes. That’s why many vets recommend keeping a pet first aid detox product on hand—such as those containing activated charcoal and kaolin clay—which can bind toxins in the stomach to help prevent absorption. I also keep a veterinary-formulated emergency kit at home, which has given me peace of mind. It’s essential to contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your dog has consumed a harmful fruit. Remember, quick action can save your dog’s life.
