Know your Black History

“40 acres and a mule” is a phrase that refers to a promise made to formerly enslaved African Americans after the Civil War. The promise was to provide land and resources to help freed people become economically independent.

The promise was the first systematic attempt to provide reparations to newly freed slaves. It was intended to change the course of racial history. However, the promise was short-lived. After President Abraham Lincoln's assassination, his successor, Andrew Johnson, overturned the policy and the land was returned to former enslavers.

... Read moreWhen I first heard the phrase '40 acres and a mule' echoed in Kendrick Lamar's work, I knew it was more than just a catchy line – especially with the bold statement captured in the OCR: 'PGLANG LL77 40 ACRES AND A MULE THIS IS BIGGER THAN THE MUSIC -KENDRICK LAMAR.' It instantly made me want to dig deeper, and what I uncovered really shifted my perspective on American history and its ongoing impact. The original article gives a great overview, but the story of '40 acres and a mule' is truly heartbreaking when you consider the hope it represented. It wasn't just a vague promise; it was a specific order, Special Field Order No. 15, issued by Union General William Tecumseh Sherman in January 1865. This order set aside a strip of land along the coast of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, extending 30 miles inland, for the settlement of thousands of formerly enslaved families. Each family was to receive 'not more than forty acres of tillable ground' and the temporary use of army mules. Imagine the sense of empowerment, the glimmer of true freedom and economic independence, that this offer ignited in people who had known nothing but brutal servitude. They started building homes, cultivating land, and creating communities. It was a tangible step towards reparations, a recognition of the immense labor and suffering they had endured. However, as the article briefly touches upon, this hope was tragically short-lived. After President Lincoln's assassination, his successor, Andrew Johnson, rescinded Sherman's order in the fall of 1865. The land that had been given to freed families was returned to its former Confederate owners. This act not only snatched away their hard-earned autonomy but also cemented a cycle of systemic disadvantage that has echoed through generations. It left millions of Black Americans without the foundational capital—land—that was crucial for building wealth and securing their future in a post-slavery society. This is precisely why Kendrick Lamar's invocation, often through his PGLANG collective, resonates so deeply. When he says 'THIS IS BIGGER THAN THE MUSIC,' he's not just talking about the historical fact; he's highlighting the profound, generational consequences of this broken promise. He's reminding us that the fight for racial justice, for economic equity, and for true liberation is deeply rooted in these past injustices. His art serves as a powerful bridge, connecting the historical struggle for land and self-determination to contemporary issues of wealth disparity, systemic oppression, and the ongoing quest for dignity. To me, understanding '40 acres and a mule' isn't just about knowing a historical detail; it's about recognizing the critical turning point it represented and how its reversal shaped the economic and social landscape for Black Americans. It underscores why conversations about reparations and addressing systemic inequalities are still so vital today. Kendrick, through his powerful storytelling, forces us to confront this past and consider its persistent legacy, urging us all to remember that history isn't just in books – it lives, it breathes, and it profoundly impacts our present.
