Jumping spider!!

As you can see from my post, this guy is a bold jumping spider, which is a fantastic species to learn about. First off, what exactly is a jumping spider? They're one of the largest families of spiders, known for their incredible eyesight and, of course, their ability to jump! Unlike web-building spiders, these aren't typically hunting in sticky webs. Instead, they stalk their prey like tiny, eight-legged cats, using their powerful legs to pounce. It's truly fascinating to watch them in action, especially when they're hunting! My Phidippus audax certainly keeps me entertained with his precise movements. So, what do jumping spiders like? Well, they love to explore! Providing them with a varied enclosure that has plenty of climbing surfaces, hides, and even some artificial plants makes them happy. For my bold jumping spider, I make sure there are different textures for him to scale. When it comes to food, they're insectivores. Many people, including myself, feed them small crickets for jumping spiders, fruit flies, or other small feeder insects. It's essential to give them appropriately sized prey – nothing too big that could overwhelm them. Hydration is also key; a light misting a few times a week helps maintain the right jumping spider humidity levels in their enclosure. Over-misting can be harmful, so a fine balance is important! Where do jumping spiders live in the wild? Phidippus audax are native to North America, often found in gardens, fields, and even around homes. You might spot a wild jumping spider on a sunny wall or a plant, patiently waiting for its next meal. As for their size, while not the biggest spiders, they are definitely not a tiny spider in the way some micro-spiders are. My male Phidippus audax is quite robust for a jumping spider, typically reaching about 13-15mm (around half an inch) in body length. They're perfectly sized to observe their intricate behaviors. You might be wondering, do jumping spiders jump and why? Yes, they absolutely do! They use a sudden burst of hydraulic pressure in their legs to propel themselves, not just for hunting but also as a means of escape. It's remarkable to see how far they can leap relative to their body size! And for those curious about jumping spider facts, one of the most interesting aspects is their intelligence. They're known to solve simple mazes and even plan their hunting routes, which is pretty advanced for an arachnid! While there are many jumping spider types and breeds, from Phidippus princeps to others, the Phidippus audax is a favorite because of its curious nature and often vibrant chelicerae (mouthparts), which can be iridescent green or blue.
