The Ritual — Manananggal
Every Manananggal carries something inside her. A black baby chicken — raised in the throat of its host, devouring her organs while keeping her alive. This is what drives the hunger. This is what the blood is for.
The curse begins with a death. A dying Manananggal passes the chick to a female relative — almost always family, almost never by choice. The recipient anoints her body with a special oil, chants an incantation, and swallows the living bird whole. If done correctly the transformation is permanent. The folklore doesn’t say what happens if it goes wrong.
The Manananggal cannot die as long as the chick lives inside her. When she is ready to pass it on — or when she is dying — the curse transfers to the next woman in the family. Generation after generation. It doesn’t end. It continues.
There is one way to undo it — but only in the early stages. The infected woman must be hung upside down from a tree, beaten, and fumigated until she vomits the chick out. The folklore doesn’t call this punishment. It calls this salvation.
