Am I toxic?
Ok but real question: am I the only one who thinks like this orrrr am I lowkey toxic HAHAHA.
I’ve kind of lived my whole life with this one mindset — “if other people can do it, why can’t I?”
It doesn’t come from a place of jealousy, like “why are they better than me?”
It’s more like… if they can reach that level, then maybe I can too.
cusss I don't mean in a sense of "why are they better than me?" or "why are they doing so well" but rather if they can be that great. why can't i? so with that in mind... i push too hard to be achieve what they have or using them as benchmark EVERY SINGLE DAY...its like they show me that is possible, and i always blame myself for not being able to do it. once again... if they can... why cant i...And that belief no doubt has pushed me through so many stages of life… but also left me feeling like I always have to measure up.
Whether it’s studying, work, fitness, or even facing fears (yes, I once told myself if strangers can bungee jump then I should not be scared too 😂), I end up benchmarking myself against everyone else. Sometimes it motivates me. Other times, it makes me wonder if I’m being too hard on myself.
and having them in my life is my sole driving force to keep going and pushing until i drop. THIS APPLIES TO EVERYTHING...
idkk lehh is it toxic? like should i be wanting to achieve great things solely because i want to? and not cus that is what other people can do also?
like yes, i want to do well in wtv im doing but then when does it stop? cus there is always going to be someone better than me... then ill just keep comparing and pushing and pushing... but until when....?
how does one find the balance between being inspired by others vs defining success for yourself....
The question of whether one’s mindset, rooted in constant comparison to others, can be toxic is a relevant and important topic in personal development. Using others’ achievements as benchmarks often serves as a powerful motivator, pushing individuals to strive for higher goals and overcome challenges that may seem daunting. However, as the article's philosophy suggests, this practice can also lead to burnout and diminished self-worth when the comparison turns into relentless self-criticism. Psychological research distinguishes between healthy inspiration and toxic comparison by examining the emotional outcomes and behavioral patterns involved. Healthy inspiration encourages growth and resilience, while toxic comparison creates feelings of inadequacy and perpetual dissatisfaction. The recognition that "if they can do it, why can't I?" can be empowering, but when it morphs into self-blame for not measuring up continuously, it may result in stress and emotional exhaustion. Finding the line between success-driven inspiration and toxicity involves self-awareness and intentional boundary-setting. It’s essential to redefine success on one’s terms, acknowledging individual strengths, limitations, and personal values rather than solely external metrics. Mindfulness practices and cognitive reframing can help individuals appreciate their unique journey without harsh judgment. Moreover, the philosophical consideration reflected in the article raises awareness about burnout prevention in pursuit of excellence. Burnout often arises from prolonged pressure to push beyond reasonable limits without sufficient rest or self-compassion, a pattern common in those who benchmark themselves excessively against others. Developing a balanced mindset includes celebrating small wins, setting realistic goals, and embracing failures as opportunities for learning rather than evidence of inadequacy. Engaging with supportive communities or professional guidance can further enhance emotional resilience and maintain motivation. In summary, the mindset described—benchmarking against others—is not inherently toxic but requires careful management to sustain mental health and genuine personal growth. Understanding where the line lies between success, burnout, and toxicity is key to living a fulfilling and balanced life.

I would say it’s a good source of motivator ☺️ at least, u are not denying urself opportunities to try different things out. But if it’s to a point where u start feeling burnout then maybe, u can sit down and think about what do u really want to achieve ✨there’s no end to comparing even though it’s a good source of motivator to kickstart but it shouldn’t be ur only motivation to do these things ✨ hope it helps ❤️
