I wish I lived this book more.

I really got into a reading slump with this book. I loved the concept: academic rivals, dark academia, murder mystery. Once I started translating the German words for the creatures, I understood it more. Good plot and loved the setting.

What really drew me in was the inclusion of German words describing mythical creatures, which I initially found challenging but eventually enlightening. Translating those terms deepened my understanding of the story’s lore and atmosphere. One aspect I appreciated was how the author meticulously built the setting—a dark, brooding academic environment that perfectly matched the murder mystery unfolding within it. The mood was consistently eerie and mysterious, adding layers to the plot and motivating the characters’ actions. For readers who enjoy immersing themselves in intricately woven stories with cultural richness, this book provides a unique experience. From my personal experience, books that combine mythology with academic settings often require a bit more attention and patience. However, the reward comes from uncovering the significance behind those mythic elements and seeing how they relate to the characters’ conflicts. In this case, once I embraced the German language snippets, the story’s depth grew substantially. For anyone interested in dark academia, intriguing mysteries, or folklore, this book is worth persevering through—even if you hit a reading slump at first. Engaging with it slowly and reflecting on the creature lore can transform the reading experience into a captivating intellectual exploration. It's a reminder that sometimes the best stories demand a deeper dive, and the payoff is a richer connection with the narrative and its settings.
