Two years ago, I had my gallbladder removed.

What I didn't expect was how much of the journey would actually happen after surgery.

For over a year, I struggled with food, digestion changes, and trying to understand what my body needed again. It was a long process of trial and error, adjustment, and learning through experience, then slowly, things started to make more sense.

I created Gallbladder & Beyond (GB&B) to share that journey honestly and to help others feel less alone in theirs.

The initial expectation is often that life will quickly return to normal, but as many find, the real adjustment starts after leaving the hospital. Digestive changes can be unpredictable, with certain foods suddenly causing discomfort or other reactions that didn’t exist before. In my experience, it took many months of trial and error—carefully tracking what I ate and how it affected me—to gradually regain a sense of balance. Foods high in fat or very spicy meals, for example, often led to digestive distress, so moderation and paying attention to portion size became key lessons. At the same time, incorporating more fiber-rich vegetables and smaller, more frequent meals helped ease symptoms over time. Equally important was mental adjustment: realizing recovery isn’t just physical but requires patience and self-compassion. Feeling alone during this time is common, as this post highlights, so connecting with communities like Gallbladder & Beyond really helped me. Sharing honest experiences and solutions provides comfort and practical advice, which isn’t always readily available from medical sources. For those navigating life without a gallbladder, it’s empowering to view the journey as ongoing learning. Each person's body responds differently, so tuning into your unique responses is essential. Personally, maintaining hydration, avoiding heavy fried foods, and managing stress have made a big difference. Over time, I found my body’s rhythm and could enjoy a varied diet again—with mindful adjustments. In short, life after gallbladder removal is a multifaceted process involving diet, digestion, emotional well-being, and lifestyle adaptations. Embracing this reality, and seeking support when needed, turns recovery into a manageable and hopeful experience. If you’re on this path, remember you’re not alone, and with time and care, a new normal is within reach.
