Buzz Off My Lemons! (But not ALL bugs are bad!)
So I was out checking on my lemon tree and spotted these little visitors—paper wasps and blue mud dauber wasps. Let’s talk about it:
The Good Buzz:
Mud daubers (bottom leaf) are actually helpful! They eat harmful insects like caterpillars and spiders.
Paper wasps (top leaf) can be beneficial too—they feed on caterpillars and other soft-bodied pests that can destroy citrus leaves.
BUT—if you’re allergic or you’ve got a serious infestation, here’s what to do:
If they’re becoming a problem:
Organic deterrents like peppermint oil sprays can help keep wasps away.
Hang a decoy wasp nest—they’re territorial and won’t build near another colony (see my earlier post!)
Remove any food scraps or sugary drips from near your tree that attract them.
If necessary, spray neem oil or citrus-safe insecticidal soap to protect the leaves from the chewing damage you're seeing (likely caterpillars or citrus leaf miners).
Friendly reminder: A few wasps = pest control helpers. Swarms = eviction notice time.
Do y’all let nature handle pest control in your garden or do you take the reins?
