Ants in My Blooms?! Chill, They're Pollinating!

But here’s how to gently escort them out…

Spotted some ants🐜 inside your squash or zucchini blossoms like this?

Don’t panic — ants 🐜aren’t harmful to your plants. In fact, they sometimes help with pollination by moving around pollen while searching for nectar.

BUT… if they’re becoming too nosy or annoying, there are a few safe and organic ways to ask them to leave without disturbing your soil or plant:

My Favorite Ant-Control Tips:

Diatomaceous Earth: Sprinkle a light dusting around the base of the plant. It’s safe, natural, and wrecks ant day without hurting your plant.

Sevin Dust (organic version): Works well as a surface treatment — just don’t overuse it and avoid the blooms directly.

Cinnamon or Citrus Peels: Ants can’t stand them. Lay a little nearby for a natural barrier.

Boiling Water (only in walkways, not near roots!): For nests far from plants.

You can grab most of these at local nurseries, big box stores, or Amazon for quick relief.

Just remember — ants aren’t enemies, but in large numbers, they can encourage aphids or protect other pests, so light management goes a long way.

Do you let the ants stay, or are you team “they gotta go”?

Drop your favorite method in the comments!

... Read moreIf you've ever spotted ants in your garden, especially in squash or zucchini flowers, there's no need to worry! Many gardeners are surprised to learn that ants can actually aid in the pollination process by transferring pollen while they search for nectar. Yet, if their numbers become overwhelming, it's wise to take a gentle approach to manage their presence. First, consider using diatomaceous earth, a natural pest control that doesn't harm your plants but effectively deters ants. For a more concentrated approach, Sevin Dust's organic formulation is also very effective as a surface treatment—just ensure you apply it sparingly and avoid blooms. Alternatively, a simple strategy like placing cinnamon or citrus peels around affected areas provides a pleasant scent while acting as an ant repellent. Additionally, boiling water can be poured on ant nests located away from plant roots, ensuring that your garden remains unharmed. Whether you decide to let ants coexist with your flowers or implement gentle control measures, finding the right balance is key. By understanding their role in your garden ecosystem, you can make informed decisions that promote healthy growth and pest management. What do you think? Should ants stay or go? Join the discussion!

Hand pollinating is an important step of indoor gardening, but I also do it outdoors on plants that have separate male and female flowers. This ensures pollination and increases yield. I don’t worry about self-pollinating/complete flowers outdoors since the wind is more than enough to pollinate
