Is Your Dog Vaccinated Against Valley Fever?
Big update on the Valley Fever vaccine for dogs 🐶🔬: Researchers at the University of Arizona and Anivive Lifesciences are working with Hennessy Research Associates to submit a licensing package to the USDA Center for Veterinary Biologics. 
They’re developing a Δcps1 (delta-cps1) live-attenuated vaccine strain, which in canine trials (prime + booster dosing) has shown high protection—reduced lung fungal burdens and lower disease scores—with minimal systemic side effects.  Mild injection-site reactions appeared but resolved quickly; otherwise, the vaccine was well tolerated. 
Right now, the vaccine is still under USDA licensing review for commercial marketing.  Some studies required by USDA (safety, formulation, environmental effects) remain in progress. 
The good news: estimates suggest the vaccine could be ready for veterinarians by end of 2025, if regulatory and data hurdles are cleared.
Valley Fever is a fungal infection caused by Coccidioides species that thrives in the arid soil of southwestern U.S. states such as Arizona, California, Nevada, and New Mexico. Dogs living or traveling in these regions are especially at risk, as the fungus spores become airborne when soil is disturbed and can be easily inhaled during sniffing or digging activities. Symptoms in dogs may range from mild respiratory issues to severe disseminated infection, including neurological symptoms that can be life-threatening. Given this risk, the development of a dedicated Valley Fever vaccine for dogs is a significant breakthrough. The new Δcps1 (delta-cps1) vaccine employs a live-attenuated strain, which has demonstrated promising protection with reduced fungal burdens in lungs and lower disease severity in initial canine trials. Importantly, the vaccine's side effects are minimal, generally limited to mild injection-site reactions that resolve quickly, showcasing its good tolerability. For pet owners in endemic Valley Fever states, protecting dogs against this disease has been challenging without a vaccine option. Currently, prevention relied heavily on limiting exposure to dusty environments and vigilant observation for symptoms. The upcoming vaccine could transform this approach, offering proactive immunity and potentially reducing the incidence of debilitating and costly-to-treat Valley Fever infections. As the vaccine is still undergoing USDA evaluation, safety, formulation, and environmental impact studies are ongoing. If successful, veterinarians may have access to this vaccine by the end of 2025. Until then, dog parents should continue preventive measures like avoiding high-risk areas during dust storms and consulting veterinarians at the earliest signs of illness.
