I was actually incredibly excited to hear about a Peaky Blinders movie, thinking it would be the perfect cinematic conclusion to one of my all-time favorite series. But boy, was I wrong. As the OCR highlights, it was utterly disappointing, and I agree – 'IT'S A MESS.' It felt tonally off and simply didn't feel like Peaky Blinders at all, which is the biggest sin for any fan. One of the biggest letdowns for me was how the movie completely lost the iconic Peaky Blinders feel. The gritty, intense atmosphere of 1920s Birmingham, the palpable tension in every room Tommy Shelby walked into – it was all just... gone. It felt like a generic gangster film trying to wear the Peaky Blinders' skin, rather than the true continuation of the story we've invested years in. And let's talk about Tommy Shelby. The OCR mentions 'The Immortal Man' and how his character felt ruined, and I couldn't agree more. What truly shocked me was the implied decision of Tommy killing Arthur. The entire dynamic between Tommy and Arthur, despite its complexities and Arthur's flaws, was built on an unbreakable bond. Tommy always protected Arthur, even from himself. To see that fundamental aspect of his character, which was so central to his humanity amidst his ruthless ambition, just discarded felt like 'cheap writing' as the OCR pointed out. It completely undermined who Tommy Shelby became throughout the series. It was a betrayal of his character arc, making me question if the writers truly understood the depth of these relationships. Then there's the bewildering treatment of Grace. The OCR highlights that she wasn't even mentioned, despite being 'The Woman Tommy Shelby was with.' For a character who haunted Tommy's entire journey, whose memory was a constant driving force, to be glossed over or ignored felt like a huge oversight. It stripped away a significant layer of Tommy's internal conflict and motivation. Similarly, other characters like Duke felt sidelined or simply forgotten, which truly diluted the family's importance that was so central to the show's identity. And the attempt to make Ada fill Polly's shoes? It was painfully obvious and, frankly, a bit insulting to both characters. Polly Gray was irreplaceable – her strength, her wisdom, her fierce loyalty, and her unique position in the family. To have Ada essentially become a 'copy and paste' seemed to miss the point entirely. Ada has her own strengths and journey, and forcing her into a role that wasn't authentically hers just made the whole narrative feel forced and predictable. It made me, like many others, question if it was 'even written by the same person' who crafted the original series. Ultimately, the movie felt like a prime example of why sometimes, 'series don't need movies.' The magic of Peaky Blinders was in its long-form storytelling, allowing characters and plots to evolve naturally. Cramming it into a film format, especially one that felt 'tonally off' and riddled with 'clichés and predictable storylines,' just didn't work. It left me with a sense of 'IT'S A MESS' rather than the epic conclusion I had hoped for. I sincerely wish they had put more thought into preserving the integrity of the characters and the world we all loved.
